Oh there great! They have a tone of personality! There just as fun as piggies! However they're nocturnal so during the day they're pretty boring.

There quills are poky! But if you pet them the way the quills lay it doesn't hurt. However if they chose to ball up it can be a sticky situation! (pun intended) They eat high quality cat foods, insects, and some fruits, cottage cheese, cheese, and cooked meats. They need to be kept at a temp. between 70 and 75 degrees or they try to hibernate and that can kill them. They are nocturnal, There gestation period is 30 days, they live up to around 5 years or so, you have to clip there nails just like piggies, they do better alone then in pairs. That's most of the basics I guess! Any other questions?

he is a real sweetie!! How do you go about getting a hedge hog as a pet?
My mum loves hedgehogs, she buys this food for them called Spike and puts it out on the patio every night along with peanut butter & raisin sandwiches which they love apparently! My dad grumbles that the slugs are thriving *** the hedgies are full of peanut butter, and my bro just grumbles that the "spikey little b*stards" get better dinners than him!
Oscar is lovely! My mum would hognap him!

Well they are illegal in some states, run wild in other countries, and you can buy them from breeders here. I'm located in WA state.

Tell your mom to try cottage cheese, or cooked chicken. Some hedgies love the stuff!

here in England we have a well know rescue place called Tiggywinkles, that rescue and return them fit and well back to the countryside , they are not encouraged as pets, and I cannot imagine anyone attempting to keep one as a pet like a few of us I do encourage them to our garden to get the slugs and love watching them,
when my son Liam was 18 months old he run up to a ball and screamed it bit him, when we looked it was a curled up hedghog, he has never been allowed to forget it now hes 17 its still funny, got a pic of it somewhere,
the pics are adorable you are so lucky,

LOL! That's to funny! I have been bit by a "ball" myself!
There are a lot of hedgehog breeders here in the states. I think they make wonderful pets. However, if I lived in England, I would never capture one to keep as a pet. Oscar was born in captivity, as was his mom, and her mom, and her mom's mom, etc.

When we were young we were always taught to check bonfires just in case. Now we don't have them as it scares the dogs and other furries so it's not a problem. I understand there is a type of hedgehog you can buy from a pet shop over here. It's a small white one (sorry cannot remember what they called them) and a store in Wakefield near me sells them. Quite expensive and you seems to need an extremely large set up but very cute :smitten:
I think i'm full on my quota at the moment, plus i don't know the first thing about them and i don't believe in buying a pet until you do.
Lovely pictures, keep them coming!

Hedgies in the *.S. come in all sorts of colors. Albino, Dark Eyed White, Cinicot, Pinto, etc...They come in as many colors as piggies do! They sell them for $150 here in the states.

Am i right in thinking he's an African Pygmy Hedgehog? I did abit about them in uni, i know that you can have breeders of hedgehod, but they don't breed the wild ones we have here in England....they breed them more as pets as they don't curl up!
They used to be from some sort of zoo 'stock' (hate that word sorry) and then were first kept as pet in the 1980's.
I read that in this country the hedgehogs that curl up are gradually dying out because they are getting killed on the roads so = hedgehog gets scared on the road & curls up & gets squashed - but the hedgehog that doesn't curl up & runs away survives. So more & more of the 'non-curl' variety are breeding ...you get my drift!

Interesting! :) I don't know an awful lot about wild hedgehogs..only the bit i learnt about pet hedgehogs, they are super cute though! They are just big softies underneath (haha get it?) ::) Oh dear don't listen to my attempts at humor lol

Yes he is an African Pygmy Hedgehog. However, he still curls up, when he's scared or grumpy. I have never heard of a hedgie that didn't curl up.
