How do you get marks out of carpet?

At my boyfriend's house he has very light cream carpets (which is asking for trouble! lol)

We have noticed a few black marks on the carpet and don't know where they are coming from. They are not dark or anything but you can tell they are there. Does anybody know how to get the marks out the carpet?

johnson baby wipes are very good to get marks out of carpets.

I use our small animal disinfectant stuff. Its briliant. In fact I use dettol for cleaning the guin cage and keep the disinfectant just for getting marks out of the carpet.
