    Pairing adult boars?

Yeah I am aware of this, I've had a few hairy moments with Zippy and George when they had to be separated for various reasons and then put back together! All the rescues I've looked at seem to want to home lone boars to groups of females so I'm struggling really. I wish I could get him...

    Pairing adult boars?

I know that they say that you shouldn't pair adult boars, that it's better with an adult and a young one, but has anyone successfully done it? I'm asking because my Zippy, who is almost 5, lost his brother George in August. I feel bad for him being on his own, but I don't really want to get a...

    Teeth issues!

I've been syringe feeding George for two weeks now, and he's still bright and lively. He's only lost 40g between then and now, 900g to hovering around 866g. He's taking the syringe feed through the bars now so he's obviously realised what I'm doing, but it's heartbreaking to see him get excited...

    Teeth issues!

Been back at the vet today for another teeth check and and x-ray. The vet said that his teeth were in a bit of a state but they've tidied them up the best they can and burred away any sharp bits. They were more concerned about his jaw, apparently his jaw muscles are just getting weaker and...

    Teeth issues!

Saw a different vet this morning, probably the best one I've seen recently, and she said his jaw doesn't feel right, it's moving more than it should and he's not happy with anyone touching it. He going into tomorrow to have an x-ray to check both teeth and jaw and then they're going to try and...

    Teeth issues!

Still no improvement :( I've been syringing critical care and pellet/oat mush into him and he's seems bright within himself but I've not seen him eat anything on his own since Thursday night. His mouth looks a bit off, like his bottom jaw isn't in line with his top jaw? I've seem him trying to...

    Teeth issues!

Thank you both for your help :) He had them done under GA because he's a very nervous pig and the vet I saw at the time struggled to see the back teeth, I think because George was probably in pain, so recommended that they be done under GA. I was happy to do this because I've had other pigs go...

    Teeth issues!

My guinea pig George had spurs filed off his molars on Tuesday. It didn't really seem to make much difference, still wasn't eating etc, and today I had to take him back to the vet as he was grinding his front teeth together and they looked they were hitting together all the time. I'm assuming...

    Stitches

It's just what my vet does I suppose, I've had another pig that had sutures by the same vet and he was fine. I think he's a miracle worker, Zippy's lump was the size of a satsuma and we weren't expecting him to live through the operation. Anyway, he's stopped nibbling them now, the salt water...

    Stitches

Are there any quick fix ways to get a guinea pig to stop chewing his stitches? My pig Zippy had a huge lipoma removed from his abdominal wall on Thursday. Since he came home he's been absolutely fine, eating pooping etc. but I've just noticed a tiny bit of blood on his towel and so I turned him...

    Lump removal

George is home! The surgery went very well and as soon he got home he went straight to the hay! I think he must have been starving because he went in at 8.30 this morning and I didn't pick him up til 4. Poor thing! Anyway, the vet thinks it was a Trichofolliculoma (sp?) considering where it...

    Lump removal

The vet isn't sure what the lump is, just that it is quite hard and not loose under his skin so it must be attached to something. He didn't try to draw anything out of it so who knows? I'm just hoping it isn't anything bad :{ I've had another guinea pig that had to wear a collar and the poor...

    Lump removal

One of my pigs, George, is having a lump removed this Friday. You can see it quite clearly in the pictures. Now this lump seems different to a regular fatty lump and that's why my vet and I have decided to remove it. It's quite large, about an inch and a half in diameter, an irregular shape, on...

Small bald stripe on piggies noses?

One of my guinea pigs has the line down his nose and the other one doesn't, and they're housed together. It seems to appear every winter and then by the summer its gone again. I just put some Galen's Garden green cream on it, and it doesn't seem to spread to anywhere else.

    Impaction question

^ That's what we've been doing, just churning them out, cos there's usually only a few in there. It's just the smell! I had to get up and leave the room. I'm sure he thinks I'm the evil aunty now! We've got another one with a stomach upset and I've been syringing science recovery into him all...

    Impaction question

One of our guinea pigs, Milo, has been pretty ill recently with a horrific case of bloat. He was treated at the vets with a steroid injection (I'm not sure exactly what because I was away at the time) and Fibreplex, plus keeping him off the veg for a few days. The bloat has completely gone and...

    Duke has pneumonia

Has your vet tried him on a diuretic to rid his lungs of the fluid? When one of ours had pneumonia the rodentologist we saw prescribed an antibiotic and a diuretic ( I think it was called Frusol? Furosemide?) which helped a lot with clearing his lungs.

    Probably a really stupid question

I know a lady that has them in her pet shop not far from me, but all her animals are rescue ones and she knows her stuff so she'll make sure they go to a good home. She's had them a while, so not sure if anyone has shown any interest :( it's sad because they are so sweet and lively.

    URI....So worried.

Yeah the vet should be giving something else, not Baytril. Our vet doesn't use it at all. One of our pigs that had pneumonia got given a stronger antibiotic and a diuretic to clear the fluid, which worked.

    The most expensive vet's bill?

The most expensive was probably for our Little Pig who sadly died a couple of months ago, after spending over £400 on x-rays and treatment. He had fluid on his lungs and had to have medication every day to try and keep it clear but it didn't work. Last time we were at the vets she told us our...
