    Recurring Lice Problem?

Hi! firstly, please make sure that you or your vet know exactly what kind of parasite you are dealing with. What you are describing is fur or hay mites, which usually come with the hay. They are the least invasive of parasites. However, your vet should also look for signs of mange mites or...

    Recurring Lice Problem?

I've had the privilege of spending 2 years with our lovely three girls. They have been outdoor pigs up until the weather became really cold and strong winds in November (Peterborough UK). I then set them up indoors to live with us . Not once in the 1 and a half years of outdoor living in a hutch...

Lice On New Indoor Guinea Pigs

That's a good idea about the sudocream, I will try that, it's magic stuff! They live in a plastic indoor hutch I have washed it out with beaphar hutch disinfectant. What do I fumigate with? I didn't realise I had to do that!

    Rabbits And Guinea Pigs

I recently bought a second hand hutch for my guinea pigs. It was previously used by rabbits but I scraped out all the poo and disinfected it. I know that some rabbits carry patella which kills guinea pigs and I wandered if my guinea pigs could catch it by being in the hutch?

How Long Does It Take You?

It takes me around Around three hours and an aching back to fully clean and disinfect a two level 5ft hutch in a garage. I spot clean for half an hour twice a day, then clean out there cage fully once a week. It's amazing how many poops two 2 year old sows can produce!

    Wound On Back, Mites?

Thankyou, I told my mum what you said and she will take him to the vet as soon as possible. I find it suprising that when I was little when we had guinea pigs (quite a lot of them at the time) we never had one with a health issue. I am going away for a few days but my mum will still be here to...

    Wound On Back, Mites?

Please have that wound seen by a vet as soon as you can afford to! It does NOT look like a bite wound from a fight and could be - where it is - either due to fungal or mange mites; to me, it looks rather like the beginnings of ringworm than mites. But that needs to be decided by a vet who can...

    Mite Advice!

Hello all :) I've been reading loads on this the last couple of days but have a couple of specific questions I can't find the answers to.. I suspect our boys have mites (we've only had them a week, they're 11 weeks old..) so I gave them their first dose of Beaphar (ivermectin) 2 days ago...

Is This Cage Suitable, From A Former Pet Which Was Not A Guinea Pig?

You can often find larger cages/hutches for less second hand on gumtree or eBay etc. Just give it a good clean and disinfect before use. A lot of people like C&C grids (I'd love to have C&C!) or make their own enclosure.

Does Anyone Know What This Is?

Better safe than sorry. It could well be early fungal, but the vet will be able to tell you for sure. What treatment did you use last time? I have found Imaverol (which is an anti-fungal dip that you leave on) it by far thebest treatment for anything fungal. You dip the whole animal, so no area...

    Guinea Pig Lice

Guinea pig lice are very common, they usually come in on hay so it may well be worthwhile throwing away all hay and getting a new batch of a good brand (often the cheaper hays are worst for lice). Ensure you disinfect all of your piggies cage/hutch and wash any bedding at 60 degrees or more...

Freckles Has A Bald Patch Around His Grease Gland And White Flaky Skin On The Hair In That Area.

also forgot - normally I clean these boys first and hold them and after do Chewy and his Mrs Poppy so that her smells isnt on me to upset Spud and Freckles too much - I take it I should be careful not to transfer anything to them but should I just give them a bath too and do a total disinfect to...

Freckles Has A Bald Patch Around His Grease Gland And White Flaky Skin On The Hair In That Area.

that would be great too - how often do you need to do the Imaverol? There fleeces are washed at 60 degrees always and hay changed daily but I take it I need to thoroughly disinfect the hutch too? many thanks!

    Fleecy Bedding, Houses And Toileting

Hmm, just done a full clean for the first time and the (wooden) hutch is really quite damp at the back corners. I have cleaned with disinfectant but need to find someway to stop the wood getting wet! Is there a piggie safe varnish?

Two Pigs With Diarrhoea Dying Suddenly

I agree with the previous knowledgeable posters. - please have the poo tested (cultured) in case there is a highly contagious element. The protozoa @gizzy mentions is called giardia. - do not bond your bereaved piggy with a new one, in case it is the (unaffected) carrier of whatever is causing...

    Is My Hutch To Small?

Your second one is better, yes :) And yes you can use fleece in outdoor hutches, just as successfully as with indoor ones. Bigger is always best when you can, as they like to have room to run around. It is also worth considering second-hand, as you can get huge hutches sometimes for very...
