Hello all and thank you for the warm welcome. The guinea pigs we are adopting have already lived outdoors and are two sows. We have the double chartwell 5ft hutch. Unfortunately scratch and Newton covers are out of stock so have got tarp to keep us going. Thank you for the tip to get another...
A hutch with a run underneath is fine (as long as it meets size requirements for the level they are going to be locked into) but they can only go in the run in summer anyway. I personally feel hutch/run combos have disadvantages and would not purposefully choose one myself.
Piggies are...
As @Piggies&buns has already said it isn't dangerous to keep piggies outside, but there is a huge difference between buying 2 young piggies who have always lived inside and banging them straight outside into a hutch which is fully exposed to the elements and is a good 10 - 15 degrees colder than...
Hi,
My vet has recommended that I use Care Fresh rather than hay for my guinea pigs bedding after a series of hay pokes in their eyes. They are outdoor piggies .Ive had look and its very expensive so I wondered if anyone could recommend any alternatives. Also are these products warm enough ie...
Thank you :) And thanks for the tip about zooplus. I covered the snugglesafe with hay last night and it did stay warmer for longer. He seems happy this morning, popcorning around and has even come out into his run to eat some grass so he's definitely not cold. The extra blankets I put over his...
Generally speaking a c&c cage isn’t secure enough for outside time - wooden and mesh runs are best. If you are going to use a c&c as an outdoor pen, then you should not leave them at all. With a secure wooden and mesh run, while you should still be there to supervise (ie don’t go out for the...
Hi all, my guinea pigs are currently indoors but I'm planning on moving them outside. They'll be in a hutch with ferplast cage attached, inside a shed so well protected from the elements. At the moment they have a homemade cage with part fleece and part hay which works well so I wanted to do the...
Thank you so much @Free Ranger really appreciate your support and for sharing your personal experiences in these situations it’s unbelievable how unwell a person can become mentally and physically when dealing with this whether it be fleas head lice any parasite etc I guess some people are quite...
Yes although that’s interesting back when I was volunteering the wild guinea pigs had heating but the pet guinea pigs never did. They just added more hay in the winter. The park got inspected every year and they never had any complaints.
Anyway I would be able to fill the Hutch with hay...
Piggies often sneeze if there is something irritating the nose such as hay dust. What are they bedded on?
However, if you have concerns then your piggy does need to see a vet. A respiratory infection is a serious issue so any concerns must be addressed.
Outdoor guinea pigs require extra...
If they have a new sow friend each, then you are fine to have a double storey hutch - one pair live upstairs and one pair live downstairs. That obviously means you can have four piggies but only take up the floor space of one cage.
Its only while they do not have another piggy in the cage with...
Thank you :) He's definitely not lost any weight and is being 'choosy' about what he eats more than anything. Leaving the boring lettuce until later when all the good stuff like parsley and mint has gone. He's a little overweight if anything as I've upped his food since the weather turned colder.
Welcome to the Forum.
:wel:
And well done for offering the unwanted guinea pigs a home.
Sadly, as you are already finding out, many pet shops sell cages and hutches that are really far too small for guinea pigs, and unfortunately the Blossom hutch is one of them.
This really does not offer...
I agree with all the above in terms of heat fluctuations, avoiding fly strike, predators etc. In the UK outdoorpigs can attract rats to a property. Some posters from Europe have sadly lost their beloved piggies to heat stroke over a hot few days recently - it can happen so fast. I also hear...
Hi all
Yesterday I took my guinea pig boy, Sweetcorn, to the vets as his eye looked really cloudy....
It turns out his eye has been damaged, most likely by a poke in the eye from Hay!
Oh NO.....
He has pain killers & eye drops and we are going back in 5 days for a check up.
Poor lad.
My main...
I'm a parent too, my first thought would be to make sure that these are pets that you and your spouse want as well! Parents are the ones who end up paying all the bills and doing all the work, so make sure you're on board as well!
As others have suggested, reading the guide is a good place to...
When I bought my snugglesafes, pets at home had a guinea pig one on sale for £22! And ones for other animals like cats (I think) for about £14. THERE WAS NO DIFFERENCE! Only the illustration of the pet on the packaging. When I wanted subsequent snugglesafes, my local PaH only stocked the...
Please plan now for the coming hot days!
Here are just some important measures but there are lots more. Please read our advice; we'd rather not need to help you with your piggies suffering from overheating, heat stroke and any resulting loss of appetite but with help you with getting your...
Thanks very much for all this advice. My two piggies have been indoors for the last few days due to the heat and although they’ve found it hard, they seem to be ok. My question is, can I put them back outside tomorrow morning (before I go out to work) when it’s set to be about 18 degrees -...
