Guinea pigs in or out in warm weather

Welcome to the forum In warm weather a hutch becomes a dangerous place as the temperature in a hutch is often higher than the outside temperature. Therefore you need to have a thermometer in the hutch and use that to know whether it’s safe for them to be in it. Don’t go by the outside air...

    having new piggies outside

...them or can i just put them out ? my plan is to have them in a bricked garage while it’s so cold with 4 snuggle safes , an insulated hutch and a heat mat with lots of hay and beds etc. i’m just worried they’ll go into shock and die as it’s so cold 😩 Having them inside isn’t an option as i...

    Ophelia

Betsie is a frightened piggy. She stays hidden in her hutch all the time. She did emerge to have a long drink and look around late last night when Ophelia wasn't out and she was unaware that she was being watched. There has, therefore, been next to no interaction between them. Ophelia...

    Floor time - how often?

My piggies live in my garage and they really enjoyed going back in the run today after about 10 days in the hutch as it's been too cold on the garage floor for them to have any time in the run (they are not directly on the concrete obviously, there is an offcut of lino, then a liner and fleece...

    Member Gallery: C&C cages/homemade cages

As I've finally been forced to make some doors for our under-hutch storage due to our little human pootling around; Piggingham Palace is 'finished' albeit only in the same way all stately residences are (and minor details like paint). It's been through several iterations over the years. We...

Thea was at the vets this morning.

...her weight and is as feisty ever. She is a very chatty girl and likes to tell me all about the day before in the run and night in the hutch with her friends at morning cuddle time. I had to clean out the hutch and the run today which is earlier than usual as there was a very strong smell...

    Am I cleaning enough?

A cover won’t stop fleece absorbing moisture if it is a damp day. This is why fleece is not recommended as a suitable bedding for outdoor piggies. Do just be careful with it. I lined my hutches with correx to protect the wood, but others have used things like vinyl flooring.

Guinea pigs in or out in warm weather

...in January and they have been living indoors but going out in the daytime when the temp has risen above 10+ degrees. They have had a thermal hutch cover which is usually off now unless it is abit windy/chilly.I wanted to get them a run however our garden is COVERED in daisies and I read that...

This sounds positive so far! In the permanent cage, I would take out anything which is definitely seen as their personal territory such as the hutches. Since the main cage has been divided, each half has become their own territory so Remove all bedding, give it a clean and put in fresh bedding...

C&C Cage or hutch in shed?

A hutch does provide more security and warmth. This is my first winter having to have a c&c in the shed (it’s been hutches for the past 6 years of the life of my eldest boy) and I’m dreading it. The security side of it is fine but the warmth is concerning me. Of course bear hutch sizing in...

    Outdoor living

Just so I'm clear on this: you're saying they shouldn't have unfettered access to the outdoor space because of the temperature, or because of other reasons as well? And what if it's been raining in summer?

    Outdoor living

...towards living space because they shouldn’t have constant access to them. Piggies do need to be locked into a suitably sized predator proof hutch every night and they cannot have access to a run/the ground/grass overnight (or if unattended) if it is below 15 degrees, frosty, or cold ground or...

    Plastic Shed

Yes foil insulation on the ceiling as well. I’ve also got it on the floor. I don’t have electric in my shed either so lots of hay, blankets and covers on hutches. You wil also need snugglesafe heatpads

Hutch on legs, lightweightish, with very small wire or plexiglass on front.

Home & Roost is a good place to get hutches from. They sell the Chartwell hutches which are well recommended. You can buy a leg kit for them if you want it raised up. Any decent hutch is going to be heavy though. If it is light then it’s made of plywood and won’t last

...lonely now . My sister in law has 7 Guinea pigs and said I can have whichever one I want for my guinea pigs new friend . My Guinea pig lives in a 6ft double hutch at the moment . I’m wondering What is the best way to find the best matched friend for her out of them and how? Much appreciated ❤️

    Am I cleaning enough?

Ok great tip regarding the scent! Thinking about it, Reggie will often be investigating while I'm putting the hutch back together and new fleeces in. He starts his rumbling a bit sometimes and checking everything is up to scratch 🤣 as the dominant one. As for the hay, I'll try that too -...

    Snuggle safe heat pad

When I had outdoor piggies, they had their snugglesafes when it got below 10 degrees at night although they rarely used them at that temperature, I felt reassured they still had them in their hutch if they felt a bit chilly x

    Betsy's Guinea Pigs

I think I disturbed Misty and Bramble having a secret meeting giving the look Bramble is giving me. Thea wasn't invited as she was in her hay tray at the other end of the hutch.
