    Outdoor Living

Hi! Fellow outdoor pig owner here! My boys live out all year long in the Bluebell Hideaway 6ft hutch from Pets at Home. In terms of insulation we have the insulated cover for the hutch from Pets at Home and also have an old quilt over the top in the winter. We use multiple Snugglesafe heat pads...

    Hutch

:agr: Just to add that even if it is in a shed I would avoid the cheaply made hutches and consider something more robust like a Chartwell (Home and Roost sell them). This will last longer and be easier to insulate and keep warm in Winter. You need to bear in mind that your boar trio will...

    Advice on housing temperature please.

What temperature is it in the garage? If you don’t have a thermometer in there, then definitely get one. Piggies and humans are comfortable in a similar range - piggies ideally need to be between 18 and 22 degrees to be comfortable. Below 15 degrees is risking them getting chilled. They...

colder than 15 degrees in the day?

I wanted to use proper celotex to do mine but couldn’t in the end, but silver foil insulation is fine (it’s what thermal hutch covers are made from)

    hutch covers

Mine are in an insulated hutch and I’m still keeping the covers on. I actually gave them heat pads last week as I felt it was quite cold. And this was before nightfall.

Buy one, get one free hutch insulation board...

The trouble is, it is a case of: buy one rather expensive High Sleeper Bed in order to get one DIY insulation board ... We have just put together a High Sleeper, bought by my parents for my nephew, which was packed in thick corrugated cardboard with 2cm-thick blocks of polystyrene, just begging...

    Introducing a 3rd sow 🐹🐹🐹

Hi all we currently have two 7 month old girls who live in a 2 story chartwell (in an insulated shed). My friend lost one of her two female pigs earlier this year and has asked us if we'd like her now lone 3 year old pig. My heart of course says yes, but my questions are: 1. I know they're...

    Runs in winter

Given piggies are most comfortable between 18 and 22 degrees, and below 15 is too cold, its generally advised that they dont go in runs in winter. The guide is if it is too cold for you to stand on the ground with bare feet , then it’s already too cold for them. Use of runs generally stopping...

New owner- advise on best living arrangements?

Ah thankyou again! I really appreciate the help- my husband is just saying do whatever you want, not helpful. I meant two smaller hutches as in two bluebell type things rather than one huge long one if that makes sense. Although I might as well get a shed in that case as I think they would...

New owner- advise on best living arrangements?

Hi everyone. Sorry if I’ve posted this in the wrong place, please feel free to move 😊 Also sorry it’s long! I recently aquired 4 female pigs. Unsure of age, young I think as the previous owner got them from a well known UK pet shop less than a year ago, they were being given away and were at...

New Guinea pig owner needing advise :)

Oh lord I totally see what your saying :) I worried now about them getting too cold and my husband can’t have them indoors as his allergy is crazy he has to take antihistamines everyday. I’ll have to have a think and see what the best options would be and discuss with him. They are such lovely...

covers on or off in the day?

My shed isn't insulated yet, I'm planning to do that for next winter. I think having the hutch sheltered from the weather made a difference, keeping it dry especially. It also means I can spend more time with them as I'm protected from the weather too!

What cage and run and can babies go outside?

Welcome to the forum Housing - For outdoor piggies you need a good, sturdy, solid hutch (ideally not made of plywood). A hutch needs to be 5 foot for a pair of sows or 6 foot for a pair of boars. You would also need a good study run for supervised run time. It’s not necessarily a case of age...

    Bonding help

Ok, so you’ve got two teenage boars. Around 9-10 months there is another hormone spike, so this may also explain his feistiness. When a pair of boars get like yours have, we advise a separation. With teens it can allow hormones to settle. If there has not been a full on fight, a neutral...
