-4 will be the windchill but as they aren’t outside then they aren’t experiencing that.
You are doing everything I do with mine in the shed (I don’t have electric out there either).
I’ve never had to bring mine indoors in a winter, as even if it has been chilly, they have always been absolutely...
Mine are outdoor. The hutch is 6ft x 3ft with an insulated bedroom area that has a thermostatically controlled heater for the winter. I have a large run about the same size that they are in almost all day in the warmer weather, but always safely back in their hutch at night. They have fly...
In terms of hutch/veranda set up vs shed set up either would be fine. Both provide you with somewhere dry to stand to tend to clean, then clean out, spend time with them.
A hutch/veranda could provide slightly less winter protection but it depends on the situation of your house etc, how you...
I know you’re not had your hutch long and I know that open cages are difficult in your garage given the temperature but would there be space for two 120x60cm commercial cages next to each other in the garage? Would that be something your mum would be happy with.
They could sit at an L shape...
I have thought about it, but its mostly below 10C each night, even in summer, so I am very worried about being able to keep them warm. Would covering the runs overnight help.
I know deep down my best option is to put one up for adoption but I just feel so guilty. I am starting to think about it...
Ok so outside but once it gets colder in the lean to. 👍🏻
Speaking from someone who used to have four separate hutches outside and then I put them all in a shed. It’s no fun cleaning them out or cuddling them in the rain, wind or snow.
It’s not so straight forward as bringing them inside for a...
Starting to stress now it's starting to get colder my lovely ladies are in 5ft hutch outside with thermal cover what to do with them in winter haven't been able to find shed unless I buy new one have very limited muted space in the house places I thought 4x2 grids might fit won't. Scared to put...
You don’t need to have a shed but it does make things a bit easier - offers wind and rain protection plus means it would be easier for you to spend time with them, clean them out. Yes the shed would need a window.
Either way (inside a shed or not), their bedding needs to be lots of hay...
Are your sister in laws piggies used to being in a two storey hutch or do they live single level? I’m asking this because if the new piggy you get isn’t used to it then it could become an issue, even if only for the short term. Not all piggies will use ramps - some take to it straight away...
The hutch does remain in the garage year round. I guess they technically could stay in the c&c overnight, although the garage is not insulated like a shed, it is just the hutch that has insulation all around it and is protected from drafts.
And yes, they are still in my bedroom. I am not sure...
Oh, I wish I was creative enough to make my own. I’m very lucky to have a welder of a granda haha.
I was wondering about a store bought one, I linked it in a previous thread I think. It probably comes with instructions but I wasn’t sure if there were any ‘hacks’ for it.
That’s piggies for you!
Fill the hutch with hay in winter.
I completely fill my hutches with meadow hay everywhere and make it particularly thick in winter (removing wet areas daily, twice daily in winter). It is great for insulating, they get right inside the hay and curl up. They...
How many piggies are shut into each hutch? My concern is that those hutches are what 5 foot? So only big enough for two sows per hutch. The hutch in the second picture actually wouldnt be considered appropriate outdoor housing (particularly for winter) given the only enclosed part (the...
Thankyou again @Piggies&buns!
I would be happy to leave the door open if the shed is warm enough. Husband is currently looking at heating options to keep it a constant temperature. I would also stuff the hutch with hay, hides and I’ve also got 4 snugglesafe on order. The sheds I’ve seen seem...
If the fleece isn’t getting damp and is drying well in the garage during winter then it’s fine. Being in a shed or garage, particularly if it is insulated, is not the same as being completely outside. The thread you mention, the person has the hutch outside in which case fleece/fleece items...
I understand, I was not making the thread completely off your back which is why I did not mention names, but it still raised a question in my head as I would not want to do anything to potentially cause issue with my pigs.
As the hutch is insulated and I take steps to ensure they aren’t living...
Unfortunately we took the hutch home and it had the insulating foil stapled to it all the way around so the whole bottom was mouldy and wet. We were going to buy a new bottom but it’s absolutely everywhere, so it’s going to have to go to the skip.
Now I have seen the 5ft, it is quite large. Is...
I would add insulation yourself regardless of whether the cover you get is a thermal one or not (it will obviously be waterproof but some are 2 in 1).
Lack of light would be a concern but if it is very cold then moving them into the garage would be the advisable thing to do
This guide will also help you - Cold Weather Care for Indoor and Outdoor Guinea Pigs
It’s great you are thinking about winter now though - always best to be prepared.
Do you also have thermal hutch covers?
Silver foil insulation can also be stapled to the hutch walls (on the outside).
You...
Hello
I have in total 7 pigs, but I need a hutch for my 3 boys, the hutch will be in a insulated shed so won't be open to the elements, I've got my eye on two bluebell hutch one with the run (that won't be attached as they are 'free range' )and the other is two teired both are 5ft. Which one is...
