GP showed signs of improvement but back to being lethargic

She doesn't seem to be grazing on hay very much at all - could this be down to being on both Dual Care and Fibreplex (as well as getting some oats), so she knows she has enough fibre? She still loves her daily veggies now that she's back on those, so not hugely concerned, but wanted to make sure...

How do I encourage my guinea pigs to eat more hay?

...from a pet store (I live way out on a reserve there are no rodent rescues here) and in the store they were given a large bowl of pellets to graze on through the day and very little hay. They're used to eating pellets 24/7 instead of hay, how do I encourage them to eat more? I see them eating...

Guinea pig's head is slightly lopsided, lump under chin

Hi all, Almost exactly a year after our last guinea pig got sick, we're running into an issue with our surviving one (fortunately the two new friends we rescued for her are fine!). When I checked on them earlier, I noticed one of them was sitting with her head slightly lop-sided. She seems...

Guinea pig's head is slightly lopsided, lump under chin

Hi No, this no longer in the normal fluctuation range and rather indicates a gradual downward trend. Please step in with some feeding top up; it doesn't have to be via syringe at this stage, just to help stabilising the wait. Could you up the painkillers a bit?

GP showed signs of improvement but back to being lethargic

A tummy upset in a frail piggy could cause these symptoms if she is feeling a bit sick and nauseous. See how she is by tomorrow evening and contact your vet first thing on Monday morning if there hasn't been any improvement in the poos (firming up again at lest partially) by then.

GP showed signs of improvement but back to being lethargic

Okay, very very good news! Her energy levels are way up, she's willingly drinking a LOT of water, did a tiny bit of grazing too. One more question - she seems to absolutely LOVE the oats in the treat ball we have for her; from what I can tell this should be useful in getting her weight back up...

    Lawn time - ground ivy

Hi and welcome Guinea pigs are unfortunately one of the species that do not tolerate it and that should not come into direct contact with it. "Grazing animals such as horses and cattle, as well as rodents (especially guinea pigs, hamsters and rabbits) do not tolerate ground ivy. It can be...

GP showed signs of improvement but back to being lethargic

It shows she has an interest but it’s not the same thing as eating hay and can’t be included as any hay intake

Experience with the cat and rabbit clinic in Northampton

Thank you everyone for your support and well wishes. Today she is much more herself. Bright and squeaking for food bless her she’s just the sweetest little piggie🥺 she didn’t come out on her own for veggies this morning and wasn’t really interested in them when offered, but happily had some...

    Ad libitum fresh greens

A wet diet isn’t a bad thing at all and keeps the bladder flushing through but it is important that any owner never suddenly increases veg amount as that will cause a digestive imbalance. It is known that the calcium in pellets can lead to stones - our forum guides explain this - but it is...

I don't know what to do

Hi I am very sorry for your problems. Please have him vet checked for potential skin parasites (especially mange mites) in case it is self-inflicted. https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/new-piggy-health-problems-uri-ringworm-skin-parasites.164633/ Try a two day separation with a...

    Enrichment and boredom

Barbering (hair eating) can be done for a number of reasons. I have added a guide below which explains it in more detail. As for enrichment - toys such as the cups and puzzles or most commercial toys are usually ignored by piggies. They do need lots of mental stimulation though and that is...

    Feeding Multiple Guinea Pigs.

I agree. I have many piggies and always scatter their veg and nuggets. It is a natural way for them to eat. They are grazing animals, like horses, deer and rabbits, etc, so have evolved to eat grass and move along as they nibble.

    Annual Lawn Re-laying!

It could help minimize the damage and add a touch of greenery. Also, rotating their grazing area more frequently might spread out the wear and tear.

Tomie is now started on methimazole for hyperthyroid!

So we are almost 3 weeks into methimazole and Tomie is doing well. She put on some weight in the first one to two weeks, but has stabilized since then, so I sent an e-mail to the vet to see if they want to increase her dosage from the 0.1 mg she is now on (they said that's a very low dose.)...

Different portions advice in different countries

I personally do feed a wetter diet than recommendation. So the guide is 75% hay, 15% veg, 5% pellets. My piggies absolutely do have 75% hay - it’s always available to them. In summer that 75% goes up with the inclusion of access to grazing on the grass (they are on grass up to 14 hours a day...

GP showed signs of improvement but back to being lethargic

What has today’s weight check shown you when compared to yesterday? Poops won’t right until the stasis and issue behind the stasis is dealt with. Next steps is to continue wirh syringe feeding until she is eating for herself

    Discovering odd sound!

Yeah, I became quite vigilent when it comes to noises and behavior changes after I lost sweet Nibble (Tribble's younger brother). I have two piggies in the bedroom so I can monitor them and hear them munching hay! I have to say, it slowly became quite soothing to hear them graze whilst I fall...

Not sure if this is the right forum but i am worried about my friend's guinea pig, is there such a thing as playful biting?

Guinea pigs don't enjoy being pinned or dangled any more than a person would, ie not at all. They generally don't bite, so if they are biting hard, it is a very very clear sign that they are being terrified by being handled this way. Guinea pigs are not flexible or robust in the way humans and...

GP showed signs of improvement but back to being lethargic

Understood, thank you! I'm not sure whether this is good/acceptable or not - she's happily accepting quite a lot of mushed pellets (around 25-30g over a 9 hour period), but her weight is still not great. Saturday morning she was at 611g, followed by a trip to the vet, then Sunday morning she...
