Minimum guinea pig cage size is too small?

A 150 cage is generally thought to be the minimum size big enough to allow two piggies to display their natural behaviours and live comfortably but bigger is always better. Sadly there are no laws enforcing this and most cages sold in petshops are a lot smaller resulting in many piggies living...

    Healing vibes for Hazelnut

I found grass or herbs were the foods they were most likely to try. However, syringe feeding was needed for a couple of weeks and it was a little and often regime, as they couldn’t take much in one go. Very slowly things began to steadily improve xx

Feeling very silly - first piggie blunder

Thanks everyone, I still feel awful, both for my current piggies and for the little one we picked up. But I know I did the right thing. The breeder took back the little one this morning, and was very apologetic, but doing my own research now I realise she should never have allowed us to take...

    need advise

That's a lovely space for 2 females, nice high sides for draughts 😊 I'd add cover over the hay as they need to graze a lot on hay and they're prey animals, and I'd have more hay.

GP showed signs of improvement but back to being lethargic

Hi all, Possibly a long one so apologies in advance! We've had two guinea pigs, Kiki and Kaka, since July 2022. We were told they were around 1.5 to 2 years of age upon getting them, but they weren't 100% sure as they were both rescues. Both piggies have grown in size since getting them, so we...

    Too much grass ?

Have you been keeping up with their weekly weight checks? That is your guide as to how much they are eating. Eating grass is absolutely fine for them to do (it works on their teeth etc in the same way hay does), but its important to build their time and access to grass up slowly so you don’t...

    Really fat pig

Hi, as piggies are grazing animals who have evolved to extract maximum nutrition and calories from grass when it comes to veggies, yes, they can be fattening if they have too many, their digestive system is very different from ours, which means they are able to break down fibre to release...

    Full on grass?

Yes they could be full if they’ve been grazing on grass. I always reduce their veggies when they’ve been out grazing on grass

Safe way to have piggies outdoor while having a dog

...make sure your dog isn't peeing in the garden in an area where the piggies might graze. Dog pee is poisonous to guinea pigs, so they can't graze on an area your dog may have toileted on. Personally unless it is possible to section off a small area specially for the piggies I think it could...

    grass

brilliant thanks, iv just hand picked some grass for them today as i wasn’t sure but they had their first grass day yesterday and loved it! i can’t wait to work our way up with the times and for them to be out grazing all day! yep of corse, it’s crazy how hot it can get!

    Worst. Cage biter. Ever.

He’s basically rotated through almost every material oxbow makes their toys out of. He likes cardboard, but he just likes the bars so much better. 1 cup veg, 1/8 cup pellets, hay piles all day. He likes to play in the hay, too, but always just gets bored and resorts back to the bars🙄

what temperature do you bring your piggies in at?

I’ll put mine on the lawn if is going to be a warm, sunny day and once it is at about 23/24 in the shed (and that can be a 15/16 degree day outside if the sun is shining) as I know from that point it is likely to just get too warm too quickly. If it isn’t sunny but is just warm, then the shed...

    Possible jawline abscess

If she “cut” ? them I hope she hasn’t used dental pliers :yikes: I have seen some videos of this procedure done on the internet, it’s not good practice as the pressure caused can split the tooth lengthwise 🙄 Hope poor Biscuit goes alright tonight and she starts to eat again 🤞

    Oats?

All our piggies, here at TEAS, get a bowl of oats, in their cage! They just graze on them, but it doesn't stop them eating hay, grass or their veg! However, it does help keep their weight up!

    Healing vibes for Hazelnut

Thankyou, this is encouraging. She is still bright this morning. She doesn't cough or drool or anything like that, just doesn't want to eat. On Friday when she was interested in the grass I offered her, as she ate it, she kept throwing her head up and down, kinda like horses do. I showed a video...

    Microphthalmia

That sounds very promising! :tu: They will likely always be smaller but you can hopefully keep them together as a pair once you separate. Unless there are life-shortening genetic issues in play - and the micropthalmia is pointing towards the possibility in your case -, they have a normal life...

    New Guinea pig owner… again!

Oh Natures Own look fab! Looks like they do a lot of nice grazing boxes and things, gives me an excuse to get that free delivery 😉 I was thinking of making my own but really unsure about what to do about an absorbent layer inside? May go for something like bath mats until I’ve figured that part out

    Hay, hay and more hay!

...veggies! Absolutely not! I fill the cages with hay every morning! The piggies get so excited and even the oldies start to popcorn! By the evening, when I feed the veggies etc, most of the hay has gone! After veg time, the cages are filled with hay, so they’ve got plenty to graze on...

Mum doesn't want to get a bigger hutch?

It’s fine to have one with a run on the bottom but its just that it’s better if it’s one which the run is bigger than the hutch space to actually offer additional space. Of course if space is an issue then that is something only you can deal with. He is definitely better off in the old hutch...

    Interesting webinar by John Chitty

When I first visited Simon Maddock he asked if Bill and Ted grazed outside and I said yes, out in the run most days weather dependant for at least 6 hours and he said he could tell that by their very good muscle tone and general overall health. I think it’s really important for them to run about...
