If they have a spayed female then that is definitely an option for him. A sow/boar bond can be more stable, but the sow needs to accept him. Keep us posted

    Possible Ovarian Cyst

Hello, this is a late reply but I just wanted to thank you so much for the resources! She got spayed earlier today and has been doing good; eating and drinking and moving around a little! I’ve bookmarked the links and they were great for preparing what I would need for ber recovery :) Thank you...

Ovarian cysts should i get hed a spay surgery

I’ve had sows spayed with no problems. I would always opt for a spay for a sow with ovarian cysts but you have to make the decision that’s right for you. @GPTV is the one person I know who has used the hormone injections Hope all goes well for you

    Routine spaying of sows?

...a final year veterinary nurse, who has an interest in guinea pigs of course. She came across this link earlier today with regard to routine spaying of sows due to risks associated with uterine cancers and cysts. Of course, any op is a serious matter for a guinea pig, particularly a full...

    Minnou’s piggies

I forgot to ask about that! The vet did say if it turned out to be pyometra, Gaia would need to be spayed. Does anyone know how long that takes? Would I likely get her home the same day?

Ovarian cysts should i get hed a spay surgery

Hello i have a 5 year old female guinea pig named pixie and she has been diagnosed with ovarian systs on both sides which are huge. You can see the lumps when she walks and she has a bald spot on one side and her nipples are crusty and the vet said that it will only get worse and she wont make...

    Minnou’s piggies

Let's hope it's just an UTI and that the antibiotics will help. Pyometra in dogs is a very serious condition that needs immediate spaying but I don't think it's that common in guinea pigs. Ovarian cysts and UTIs are very common on the other hand.

Suspected Ovarian Cysts - Advice Please!

I second that. Same vet as I have used for my own sows - all have made it through their own spays successfully, even with the emergencies. :tu:

Spayed sow and un-neutered boar? Decisions.

Evening all, I have a recently bereaved sow. She was spayed for medical reasons and her last companion was an intact boar who she was very close to but not interested in his sexual behavior. Now we are looking for a new friend and have a few options from local rescues. There is a neutered boar...

Experience with the cat and rabbit clinic in Northampton

Tico went for a spay and also some blood tests while she was under. Simon assessed her as a relatively high risk piggie as she was a bit underweight and her breathing was a bit laboured. A spay is a risky op, especially one with laboured breathing as lying them on their back puts a strain on...

    Intermittent bleeding

Oh I’m so sorry to hear this. But please be reassured that many of us have had sows spayed. In your shoes I would make exactly the same decision. But I would also say that if you have any concerns about the surgery it’s a good idea to schedule a call with the vet. Please do take the time to...

Suspected Ovarian Cysts - Advice Please!

So we went to the vet yesterday and vet confirmed my suspicions that her hormones are all over the place. They agree that the best thing to do whilst she is young and healthy is to spay her, if she is having issues now then they will only get worse as she gets older. She is booked in for the...

    Spaying of sows!

Here at TEAS we already have a policy to neuter all boars before rehoming. However, I am now seriously considering spaying all sows before rehoming too! So many older sows are having problems, later in life, with cystic ovaries or other problems with their reproductive tract, but at this stage...

Suspected Ovarian Cysts - Advice Please!

...is very experienced in neutering of guinea pigs (spays as well as castrates). We neuter all boars before rehoming and are now going to start spaying all young guinea pigs, and Simon does all our surgery. It would definitely be worth getting an appointment to see him. Our Cat & Rabbit Clinic...

    Spay or not?

I unfortunately had to make a similar decision for my angel baby Peaches. She was diagnosed with an inflamed uterus (pyrometra ) 2 years ago now. She had an emergency spay which didn’t go well post op and sadly she passed. I 100% regret this vet as he was always rough with my pigs. Never did...

    Advice?

Not sure if this is the right place to put this thread, sorry if it isn't 🙏 I've just been really weighing my options for past month or so and I'm stuck, I don't know what to do. In February, I took my girl Dolly to the vet as it seemed a bladder stone had come back, which it did. Fortunately...

    Suspected ovarian cysts

I hope that all goes well. My own several sows have all been spayed there (apart from the first one) and have made a full and problem-free recovery.

Ovarian cysts should i get hed a spay surgery

...asked a specialist whether we could try them for a piggy I had who had a whole list of health issues at 8 years old and had decided against spaying, but she said it would likely make the issue worse. So it seems to depend on the vet, the pig, and type of implant..I assume maybe there's more...
