    Tumor in Guinea pig

I've always opted straight for spaying unless they're a not good candidate for surgery (I had one who was very old, severe neurological issues etc that we left alone) but I've had what must be almost 15 piggies spayed now and they've all done wonderfully. So imo you are doing the right thing...

    Adding boars

If you decide to have a mixed gender pairing, please get your boy neutered and wait 6 weeks post op, unless you find a sow who has been spayed.

    Newbie

Welcome to the forum. I am sorry you haven't had a reply yet, hopefully an expert will be along soon. My own understanding (I'm not an expert) is that spayed sows can be introduced to a boar as soon as their wounds are healed. It's not like boars where you need to wait six weeks.

    Eriathwens piggies

...so does Mabel, she has been missing cuddles since the loss of Gus and Ebony as the main herd aren't big on cuddling. Pippin likely needs spaying soon so as she is of a similar, elderly age as Mabel, I will probably have her spayed and put her with the pair as well, as Mabel and Pippin have...

    bonding question

Thank you. If it goes well over 6 hours with the first pig ( there is a second choice) I’m going to put them together in a disinfected c&c with a new base. I hadn’t thought of the pig loos so appreciate that. Just loads of hay. If there is trouble at 2am then I can’t help that. Final point...

Heatwave warning for the UK - How to combine lots of little measures to save lives.

It's going to be 30C here tomorrow they are saying and I'm worried. The good part is that I've got the experience of several heatwaves behind me and I know what to do to keep the piggies as comfortable as possible (and I've been re-reading the above links). But on the other hand, Toffee is an...

...writing here and I hope I can find some answers and help 😔 One of my ladies (3 years old) went through splenectomy because of a tumor and spaying because of cysts at the same time this Tuesday 10/09. The surgery went well, she was eating immediately after that, not as much as before but...

Suspected Ovarian Cysts - Advice Please!

...with them now. All of the symptoms you’ve listed are classic signs of ovarian cysts. When it comes to treatment, I’d always recommend spaying as early as possible. I initially didn’t want to put my girls through surgery, so I went down the injection route instead, but unfortunately, it was...

Post Op Bedding Advice For A Naughty Piggy

Hi Everyone. My guinea pig Willow is getting spayed next month due to being a very hormonal young lady. She is 18 months old, very curious, mischievous and likes to chew/destroy things. Due to this I use shavings, straw and hay as bedding. If I use fleece bedding, towels or bath matts she...

    Recurring UTI

That’s very interesting. I will discuss with the Vet next week. She is a bit of a GP expert and helps out in the rescue. Any comments on behaviour during these IC episodes ? My lovely Olivia is very happy, but always seems to have blood on the test strips. Also urine does smell a bit...

    Are crusty nipples uncomfortable?

Back in January Tico had a spay at c&r. The reason for the spay was mystery weight loss, she definitely had the symptoms of cystic ovaries and nothing else was visibly wrong so we went for the spay in case. Turns out she had some cervical cancer but Simon, the surgical god that he is, removed...

    Swollen female bits

Good luck at the vet! When one of my girls were spayed she ended up with swollen bits too a year or two after, turned out she was intersex and the reduction in female hormones elevated her testosterone and she grew a sort of pseudo penis inside her urethra! Fingers crossed its something simple...

    Bonded sows acting differently post-spay

Hi all, my two 4.5 yo sows have had recent spay surgery with a cavy savvy exotic vet due to very large ovarian cysts. It was initially a bit touch and go with Dora, and Winnie, her bonded sister, sailed through surgery. Both were on metacam post surgery as well as cerenia, and Dora also on...

Sleeping more? Is it an issue?

...they can see that it got lots of fluid around it. So we booked her to be spayed on Friday. The only worry I have is they haven't done much spaying in guinea pigs but have done a lot of spaying rabbits. We had our past piggy Ella got spayed in that vets but she passed away and didn't wake up...

    Recurring UTI

Spaying is quite a major operation so you want to do that for a very good reason. But having the womb and ovaries checked, if they haven't yet, wouldn't hurt. It is rather tricky to work out what exactly is going on in your case and the urinary and reproductive tracts have their openings very...
