    Still Doing Soft Poos :(

...I'm not sure that this is the real problem) 2) I would strongly suggest another sample - collect lots of cowpats and specifically ask for giardia PCR test as opposed to microsocopy. Last time we had a pig on the forum with this type of chronic issue they were finally diagnosed with giardia...

    Cryptosporidium

Thankyou for this informative post. can i ask how old was your pig with giardia? I have found that when piggies reach six they often lose wieght and then stabalise at a lower weight and have always put this down to kidneys, etc not working as well as they once did. Also was there anything you...

Upset stomach not responding to any treatment

Thanks so much for those replies! :) The poo was sent away and tested on 3 accounts, for salmonella, something else, and giardia. I was told it tested positive for giardia. So I'd say I don't see the point of continuing with the Panacur, seeing as it was given for 5 days and I've done 7 days...

Upset stomach not responding to any treatment

...get at any chemist or supermarket and the pig should be on this for the duration of the antibiotic treatment http://www.cdc.gov/parasites/giardia/treatment.html Giardia is also higly contagious, person to person, animal to person, animal to animal, so strict hygiene protocols should...

    Still Doing Soft Poos :(

Thank you Pebble. Earlier she had quite wet poos, I was very worried, she hasn't eaten as much today either so I syringe fed her a little bit earlier, but not much. She was hunching up when going to toilet as well, so I have already given her some Tramodol, as she is on a low dose Metacam daily...

Diarrohea massive problem - need help please

...to get a poo culture done and tested for antibiotic sensitivity. Last case of proper diarhooea i saw on here turned out, after culture, to be Giardia. Apart from that withdrawing veggies and giving pellet mush/VitC/probioitic or critical care......with added fibreplex is the way to go. If...

...need longer than 5 days of Flagyl, but will see how she gets on. Peanut still fine. I'm cleaning their cage with a bleach solution tomorrow during their cleaning out session, but not overly concerned about bleach cleaning everything, seeing as Peanut hasn't even appeared to have caught the...

...either spaced apart across the day, or just done in two goes at the same time. I've just done her first dose, so fingers crossed there'll be some improvement soon. Should I also be giving her cage-mate Peanut a dose at all? He's never shown signs, but isn't giardia meant to be very infectious?

Upset stomach not responding to any treatment

...to this much to be honest, there has been loads of lovely advice. - Metronidazole (flagyl) is the best and first line of defense against the Giardia which is great, so you may see some sort of improvement. - dietary intolerances is certainly also a possiblity so the trial with the veg is a...

...testing for something I can't remember what the vet said it was, will come back tomorrow and the vet will call me. But the testing for giardia/worms he said came back positive! He is suggesting starting Maggie on Panacur for that. So I should be going in to see my current vet to discuss all...

    Cryptosporidium

Just a note symptoms "MAY" not always reliable I had a pig with a similar protozoan type infection "giardia , and by all accounts the symptoms should have been severe diarrhea but the symptoms of this pig was simply loss of appetite , my vet took a sample but only did a basic float for...

    Mystery Illness Affecting My Piggies

...therefore also suggest faecal cultures as well as faecal floats. Not only would you be looking for yeast/fungal and intestinal parasites (eg Giardia, Eimeria, Cryptosporidium) but also bacteria such as Salmonella and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis. I am particularly thinking of Salmonella here...

    diarrhea on a large scale

Do they go out on the grass? It could be giardia - if so, it should come back in the faecal analysis. For those who read the link and concerned, Panacur gets rid of giardia http://www.addl.purdue.edu/newsletters/2002/summer/igiardiasis.shtml Sorry to hear about Mabel :(

...him miss out on veggies too. The previous times when I cut out all veg for a few days it had no effect on her poos anyway. If she caught the Giardia back in April/May (her symptoms have been on and off since then really), perhaps it will just take a very long course of Flagyl to clear it up...
  16. Amanda1801

I hope your advice was correct.

Has he had a course of panacur since this started? It would rule out giardia/giardiasis http://www.addl.purdue.edu/newsletters/2002/summer/igiardiasis.shtml

    Do you treat as prevention?

Wouldn't let me edit as I'd left it too long... Another reason I worm my piggies regularly (with panacur) as it covers against the protoctist Giardia too.

    diarrhea on a large scale

they do go on the grass.... but mabel hadnt been on the grass for nearly 2 weeks so surely thats no longer valid in her case... the 6 indoor guys were out on the grass very recently... the 4 outdoor guys again... have not been out in a while... it litterally is at random... x

    Ivermectin, xeno, panacur?

Worms are very rare in piggies but they can pick up giardia which is a nasty parasite. If you intend to let your piggies graze on grass it may be worth worming them, as most animals pick up parasites from grazing, hence horses etc usually need regular worming...

Considering I have 2 jobs and have a bank account just for my pigs vet bills, yes. I put quite a bit in it each month. So your attempts to put me off, or trip me up are not going to work.
