What to put on bottom of hutch?

Normally hutches have wood on the bottom and are raised off the ground with legs for warmth and security. You would ideally put a protective layer on top of the wood such as a sheet of plastic, Lino or Correx to protect the floor from urine A run is normally made with wood and mesh but is open...

    How to waterproof wooden hutch

I would line the hutch with lino to protect the wood from urine. You can get off cuts from most carpet shops or places like the pound shop may sell vinyl tiles. I would also use newspapers or puppy pads underneath the towels

    white patches in hutch

They are moving to their new home soon and I'm going to line the sides with correx to protect the wood :) Thank you for your quick replies, just wanted to be sure it was nothing to be concerned about!

advice on guinea pig shed/wendy house

There is no need for any specific shed - anything will do as long as it is good quality and not likely to blow over in strong wind! You will need a 6ft hutch for three piggies. Double check your measurements - things such as a 6ft hutch won’t fit along a 6ft side of a shed as the internal shed...

    new hutch

No special tips from me as I’ve never built one. Just be sure to go for predator proof mesh rather than just chicken wire on the front as it’s stronger and therefore safer for your piggies. And on the floor I’d put Lino to help protect against urine seeping into the wood.

    Waterproofing wooden guinea pig hidey

I have used Cuprinol Garden Shades for the outside of their hutch, the divider between their sleeping area and main section, and their mezzanine. (Indeed you can see the 'delightful' purple in my avatar -- my daughters' favourite colour!) It says, on the tin, 'Believed to be safe, once dry, for...

    Engel's Herd

I was thinking of lining it with correx? As it'll stop the bedding spilling out and add as a layer to help keep warm, I know it's useless on its own but if I layer newspaper, correx, newspaper, shavings then hay it'll help with warmth? How many snuggle safes should I get? I was thinking of one...

    Waterproofing wooden guinea pig hidey

Just to clarify-- as you would expect, you can get many many different colours, so you don't have to have in-your-face-purple (sorry, 'purple pansy')! The things I do for my daughters...

Made cage out of pine timber what to do so that they don't chew on it?

Try going to a carpet supplier & see if they have any cheap remnants of lino, you could put this on the base of the run, cut it so that it slopes up the sides a little too (I expect the 3cm you mentioned would be about right?) overlap the corners of the lino where you cut it&there should only be...

    Help with hutches

I tend to agree - you could just add a new floor on top of the old one - most DIY stores will cut a piece of wood to size for you. You could then cover it with lino to protect it from urine. But this hutch is much too small for any rabbits, so before you convert it please do some research on a...

    Help with hutches

It’s not for me. My friend has 2 dwarf bunnies, a boy and a girl. They’re currently in a similar sized hutch that was bought as 2 separate levels (the boy bunny isnt fixed so he wants to keep them separate) The buns had another hutch joined to the side so they had 8ft each of running space. But...

    Enrichment Ideas for Guinea Pigs

    Combining Vetbed, Shavings And Hay..?

Vetbed is very soft, fluffy & bulky. I wouldn't use shavings underneath as it would spoil the softness & smoothness. But you will need something under to absorb urine wicking through & also protect the wood floor of the hutch. When my boys lived in a wooden hutch I put washable waterproof terry...

    cage liners?

Uhaul furniture pads and fleece are very popular among US guinea pigs owners. http://www.uhaul.com/MovingSupplies/Protective-stuff/Furniture-Pad The uhaul pads are made from recycled denim and are very absorbent. I line my cage with 2 layers of uhaul and one layer of fleece on top. I...

    New to C&C cages... help?

Ditto on using fleece. It's the greenest thing you can use for the cage since you can reuse it for years. You'll just have to sweep daily and wash the fabrics weekly. You can buy fleece from Joann's Fabric. They are on sale now. They blizzard fleece works really well at allowing urine to drain...
