If you look along the top of a post, where the date and time it was posted is, across at the top right there is a # and a number. That is how you will find the post I mentioned above.
Straw is not a recommended bedding for guinea pigs. It’s too sharp for their eyes and feet. It has no...
Some very good points there Truffolo.
I will be having electricity connected to the shed. It will be insulated and will have a heater in the winter and a fan in the summer.
The guinea pigs (Shimmer and new guinea pig once I have one) will come into my bedroom in the very hot and very cold...
That’s a great idea thank you for the advice👍
I have no idea how but my shed is a miracle and never exceeds the outdoor temperature and the thermometer inside the shed is a good few degrees cooler than the general shed temperature. I thought they’d have to come inside most of summer but they...
Yes foil insulation on the ceiling as well.
I’ve also got it on the floor.
I don’t have electric in my shed either so lots of hay, blankets and covers on hutches.
You wil also need snugglesafe heatpads
I'm sorry to hear this.
You don’t yet know how well the radiator will keep your shed up to temperature so best to assume that it won’t (it may only be capable of taking the edge off the chill rather than keeping them fully at the temperature they are accustomed to - going to depend on shed size...
For outdoor piggies (those not in sheds where oil filled radiators tend to be used), snugglesafes microwaveable pads are pretty much the safest and only thing.
If you can get electric to your hutches then greenhouse heaters have been used in hutches but you would obviously need to make sure...
Blossom lost her friend about a month ago. Pompom was suddenly motionless one evening and we rushed to the vets but she had to be pts. Blossom isn't eating her pellets today and seems sad. Not squeaking as much. She's had her broccoli etc .. and is pooping but just seems lonely. She's almost 4...
We are new to guinea pigs, still at the planning phase so don't actually have any yet. They will need to live outside so I'm looking for help in how that could work. I have done some research and see one important point is temperature and keeping them warm in winter.
I'm thinking of getting a...
Is there any way you can buy a cheap microwave? Mine was £20 from a supermarket and literally only used in winter to do the piggies heat pads!
Otherwise, lots of hay in the whole hutch, hay in hides, lots of insulation on the hutches - the old duvets/sleeping bags/blankets under the waterproof...
Welcome to the forum
We are here to help and advise you in a friendly way! We absolutely are accepting of outdoor set ups and will do all we can to help you.
I’m an outdoor owner myself (I do have a shed though)
I'm really sorry to be the bearer of bad news but this kind of hutch is not...
Hi and welcome
Here is our helpful cold weather care guide, which you may find helpful. Generally, we recommend to treat guinea pigs like tender plants. If you have them outside, then an insulated shed or a really well insulated hutch is a must...
Welcome to the forum
I keep mine outside in a shed. I have a 8ftx6ft shed.
I actually find keeping them cool outside in summer is considerably harder than keeping them warm in winter.
Yes a shed would need to be insulated. I have silver foil insulation in my shed.
Winter is pretty easy -...
Yes, it does.
I assume you don’t have the option to have a shed they can live in?
Adapting and joining two hutches (removing the solid sides and replacing with mesh) becomes the best option to meet all needs.
You would have to DIY hutch covers and insulation as you won’t buy one off the...
Hi there, thanks for the reply!
Oh no! That's a bummer :( Thanks for letting me know. It was given to us so I just assumed by its size it would be more than big enough!
The entire downstairs area is approx 150x60 (only slightly smaller than the 180x60).
If I get some wood cut and boxed-in the...
Straw isn’t really a recommended bedding anyway (it’s too sharp and has no nutritional value) - hay is the best thing for a bedding, fill their space with it.
I would recommend you do insulate the shed. My shed has silver foil insulation stapled all over the inside.
However while it helps a...
How old are your boys?
150x60cm is only minimum for two boys, so while ok, the benefit they would get from 180x60cm is immense - it can ensure their bond doesn’t fail due to lack of space. Boars are so territorial that size really does matter to them.
If they are young /not yet...
It also stapled and taped mine to the walls and ceiling, but I did not put it on the floor. However, the hutch and run is off the floor and the part where they sleep is also separately insulated.
The real challenge with an insulated shed is balancing the insulation vs the ventilation. We end...
New custom made shed is officially ordered.
10x6, two windows and a stable door! Should be here in around 5 weeks! I am so excited.
I am getting foil insulation to put along all the walls, does it need to be on the roof aswell?
I also might see if my grandpa can make one of the windows...
They are less than a year old! Coming up to 1 around December :) No major territorial scraps as yet thankfully. Just some rumblings/warnings.
Yes I am planning on getting something bigger. I was looking at potentially getting a small Wendy house/play house to give them more room. We don’t have...
