    Outdoor shelter in winter

I’m new to owning guinea pigs and would be grateful for some advice. My piggies live outside in a well insulated hutch (insulated 50mm Kingspan boards) They have heat pads for the cooler nights and plenty of fleece bedding which will be supplemented by lots of hay as it gets colder. I’ve read...

    Seagrass Hide

It’s fine for them to destroy the seagrass tunnels - it’s the fun of them! You can also use cardboard tunnels (but they will also be destroyed) Mine are also in a shed. For winter, they have loads of hay, fleece tunnels (but they don’t always dry well enough being outside in colder weather so I...

    Honestly, I just can't win!

How are your piggies enjoying their fleecy liners now? I hope they are snuggly warm! I presume being in a garage there isn't the issue of fleece feeling damp when the weather isn't dry? I'm hoping the same goes for my hutch in the outbuilding once I get my 3 piggies in there. I realised...

    Member Gallery: Sheds

I love this, I have them in a shed but not yet set up for them to roam. Guess what I shall be doing this evening! Do you leave the light on over night?

I have just moved our outdoor hutch into the shed for the winter. Admittedly, my shed isn't very shed-like since we converted it into my study, given that it has a concrete floor and a proper roof with a velux window. (We also put cladding on the inside.) It is insulated, water-tight and free...

Hutch & run plans - what do you think?

If possible don’t buy piggies, adopt from a rescue centre. Buying from a pet shop can bring problems - missexing, unexpected pregnancies as well as potential illnesses and potential problems with the bonding (pet shop piggies are just put together for sale and not correctly matched for their...

    The main herd

Skinnies do need to be kept warm all the time even as fully grown adults (adulthood starting at 14 months of age). A baby would have a harder time staying warm but skinnies do find it harder throughout their whole lives. I use four snugglesafes for my two piggies as mine live in my shed and...

    Outdoor Housing

I use fleece bedding with towels underneath. I've been using the same fleece for years. I just got new fleece ready for them the other day, and I think that's helped with the smell a bit. I don't have a sensitive nose at all though, and my grandmother does. Thank you for telling me that about...

    Engel's Herd

Mine eat so much more without it being in racks. They love being amongst, in, under, on top of hay! Yes, haypoke is going to be part and parcel - Dexter has had one, Pops has had two - given their need for hay, while you can minimise, you can’t remove the risk entirely My old Bluebell hutch...

Damaged Eye & bedding advice needed !?

Thanks for your reply... In your opinion should I just carry on as we were...? I made an insulated hutch liner yesterday but it felt so cold and damp this morning! I think because the vet said no hay and no Aubiose as bedding that really worried me. Not sure what to do for the best?!

    Confused newbie

Fleece outside in summer is ok, but it’s not suitable in winter though if you are planning on them being outside year round. It takes a lot of work to keep them warm enough outside so do ensure you do your research in advance of cooler weather

    Inside to outside summer accommodation

Hi and welcome With climate change well underway we are going to see more and more heat spikes and prolonged heat waves when hutches and lawns in the path of a hot breeze can turn into death traps - even those in the shade I would keep my piggies as indoors piggies, especially with hutch theft...

    Outside pig help

I have my two pigs outside (a 6ft double storey hand-built to order hutch) and have a hay rack like this to keep some of the hay (at least) clean 😂😂. Then I also put a foraging pile too, made up of a couple of different types of hay and some of the foraging autumn/summer harvest mix you can...

best bedding for long haired piggies

Where they live will make a difference. If they are indoors then they can, as an alternative to shavings, be bedded on hay or, more popularly, indoor piggies are bedded on fleece. If they live in a hutch/shed outside, then hay is the best type of bedding for warmth

    Nighttime cage necessary?

Hi all, we’re new to Guinea Pig ownership and having put our girls in an outdoor hutch we have decided to move them back indoors permanently. I have ordered a C&C open top cage but wondered about nighttime, should I put them in a closable cage then? Will their food attract mice into the house? I...

Should I put my two male guinea pigs in a shed?

As siikibam has said, my boys live in my shed. It’s an 8ft x 6ft shed but they also have a hutch in there. They free roam shed in summer (with their hutch door always open), but are locked into the hutch in winter at night time and only get time to play in the shed itself when it is warm...

    Cosies overnight

Yes it's fine to leave in overnight. Mine have these in the winter in the hutch so that they can snuggle down in them. Mine are cotton on the outside and fleece on the inside so that in the summer I can turn them inside out so that the cotton is on the inside and the fleece is on the outside.

    Good c&c cages?

My girls are being housed outside - they do come inside when it is cold and they have plenty of hay and a special guinea pig hot water bottle when it gets a bit chilly and when it is not in the summer they have got cold ice packs covered in blankets so they don't get too cold and also sometimes...

    Hemp bedding

Yes but how long before it got stinky I'm wondering? My piggies are outside a lot just now, (not today, as it's raining so they are in the hutch) my cleaning is down to once a week. Howevet, when they are indoors during Autumn & Winter I change to fleece which gets smelly after a few days and...
