Mine live in my shed (with a hutch as well). I use megazorb and hay for bedding. I also really like aubiose but I don’t find it easy enough to source, switched to megazorb and really love it.
You might be able to use fleeceoutside in summer but it’s not suitable for all locations. It...
A couple of wooden or cardboard hides stuffed with hay for them to snuggle into.
Definitely get more snuggle safes. They are essential for outdoor piggies as they are the only source of external warmth. I have four snuggle safes between my two boys and they are heated up each morning and each...
I have 2 horse wash bags which I spread the piggie washing in and put them in the washing machine. I have a large 8kg load machine if you have an ordinary load 4.5kg you may need to do 2 washes. I wash it on a 60 degree wash which in my machine is approx an hour and put white vinegar in the...
Fleece doesn't really work in Winter if they are outside.
In a shed is different, but if their hutch is out in the open, fleece has a tendency to get damp and not offer much warmth, so you would be better off sticking with a disposable bedding like shavings or aubiose.
Where are you in the world?
Will your shed/playhouse have electricity and therefore be able to be heated?
I’m in the UK and my two boys live in a shed but it doesn’t have electricity so can’t be heated.
If you are planning on them moving out there to live permanently, and you are not able to...
Welcome to the forum
My boys live in a hutch in my shed.
15 degrees or less is too cold for piggies - their comfort range is 18-22 degrees - so while keeping them outside is possible, it takes a lot of work. As the nights are consistently below 15 degrees (getting down to 5 degrees in my...
No it’s not recommended for use outside at all - it wont dry properly so they will be constantly on wet bedding. Plus it can suck moisture out of the air and then stay damp. You might get away with using it during the height of a warm and dry summer, but definitely not between now and next...
Hello and welcome. It’s great to be thinking & planning ahead, particularly for winter months. Many of us keep our piggies indoors all year and pop them into a run outside when the weather is warm enough so they can enjoy some fresh air & grass. Children (and parents) also find it easier to...
Yes. When the hutch was built, they used some kind of insulating thing on it. I then added more insulation on the inside and outside. It’s then covered with blankets, waterproof and tarpaulin. There are four heat pads per pair and the hutch is stuffed with hay. I also cover their hides with...
So after visiting my local independent pet shop today I am unable to purchase a home for Pig through them, they are struggling to get decent hutches for a reasonable price so I am going to have to buy online. Pig will be living alone but alongside the girls so I am looking at this
4ft Single...
I would say a lot depends on your cage type, location and set up.
We started off with wood shavings in a hutch in the living room (they were supposed to live outside, but came home during a cold snap and never made it out).
This worked well in a hutch, but being inside it meant their were...
You still need to be careful with the positioning of a hutchoutside in summer. Hutches tend to trap heat and become hot also and in a hutch even in a warm breeze in a shaded position can make the hutch too hot inside - possible to do it of course, but of course it’s something to be prepared...
Fleeceoutside is only really an option in summer anyway. If you try to use fleeceoutside in winter, youll likely find it remains wet all the time.
In the open space, you will always need something absorbent down as a base layer, so option 3 won’t work.
Youll most likely find that as they pee...
I have two piggies, both females - their living arrangements will be similar to yours with free roam all the time in summer and then locked in the hutch overnight in the winter. The hutch was more designed to give a bigger enrichment space for them as opposed to floor space.
Ill stick to using...
how many piggies do you have and what sexes? How are you planning on their living arrangements being - ie are they going to be locked in the hutch at any time or just free roam all the time?
a three storey hutch - if you mean all connected by ramps - does not increase floor space. You can...
Vetbed is very nice, you can certainly use it in a good summer. It’s just that the experience is that fabric beddings outside in a UK damp winter are problematic.
Vetbed might keep liquids locked away better than fleece would do in winter but you’d still want to be very sure they the top...
Yes you Will need another. You need to have multiple of every item.
a 5ft hutch is good for two sows and the chart well hutches are nice.
I wouldn’t put insulation on the hidey because they will eat it.
the issue with fleeceoutside is that it can absorb moisture from the air and remain wet -...
At the minute mine use there sleep area as a toilet so I'm assuming they will so this with their new hideaway hutch. Still easy to spot clean as all in one place. But they may differ when in a bigger space. So potentially just stick to what I'm doing and maybe switch to fleece in the summer
I used to have a hutch pretty much the same as that one and a thermal cover but I really recommend that you just have them inside if possible but maybe in a run on hot days but not over night but if you can't then remember that you can't use fleeceoutside and my one of that went moldy round th...
We have just added extra layers to our girls hutch, we've stuffed some old pillows around the edge between the hutch and shed, they have a greenhouse heater, which is permanently on, in the hutch and a snuggle safe each inside fleece houses and lots of hay, they are currently in the shed so...
