    A few questions I have

Well done on doing your research before jumping in. With regards a shed, I don’t know which ones are good. Perhaps dad may be able to help there? You can insulate using the insulation bubble wrap stuff that’s available in diy shops. You would need to put them in a hutch inside the shed. They...

    How to encourage ramp use?

Piggies are ground roaming creatures and aren’t natural climbers so ramps can be scary to them - some will use them happily, others not. This is why upper levels of hutches do not count towards the cage size and why the bottom level of the cage needs to meet size requirements. Ensuring ramps...

    Fleece bedding outdoors?

Hi all, my guinea pigs are currently indoors but I'm planning on moving them outside. They'll be in a hutch with ferplast cage attached, inside a shed so well protected from the elements. At the moment they have a homemade cage with part fleece and part hay which works well so I wanted to do the...

    Help for Peppa

My boys live in my shed so I use wooden bendy log huts. I do have one Elmato three exit hide as well but that wasn’t cheap. All my hides are two exit (tunnels) and I can only really use fleece in summer (fleece outside in winter doesn’t work well) but they do get a fleece tunnel each overnight...

    Keeping warm in winter

It may have been you I mentioned it to previously, but if you’re only using fleece outside as bedding in winter then it is highly likely it won’t work. Fleece bedding simply isn’t warm enough They need lots of deep piles of hay to snuggle into all over the hutch. The hay also helps to...

    A few questions I have

Yes I do keep my boys in a shed. They have a 6ft x 2ft hutch in my 8ft x 6ft shed. If you aren’t going to heat your shed, then a hutch is essential. You will never be able keep a whole shed warm enough in winter. Piggies need to be kept above 15 degrees. As @Siikibam has said mine are locked...

    Getting another guinea pig...

What you are seeing is fleece bedding. The type of bedding you use is entirely up to you. It’s whether you can manage the washing using fleece bedding creates. Fleece bedding needs to be changed out every 3-7 days depending on many factors. if you use fleece blankets (which you can get...

    Outside pig help

Hi I just ordered a massive double storey outdoor hutch for my 2 guinea pigs and am looking for some advice, I'm putting it around the side of my house as that nearly completely cuts off all wind and bad draughts as the wind hits from the opposite side, I have 2 fleece beds and 2 fleece pillows...

    Engel's Herd

It’s got to be your call - you need to be sure that they aren’t exposed to large temperature fluctuations - that the temperature out is very close to what it has been inside; and that it remains that way. That is only part of the story though, youve got to be aware of the humidity change as...

Re-reading all comments regarding shed accommodation. Sorry about going back and forth. If I were to split the bottom and they have 2.5 with the extra c&c out the front. Is it ok for me to close them back into the hutch at night? More for my own piece of mind if anything. For the extra c &c...

    Guinea Pigs in Bedrooms?

Hello Hummingbird. Thank you for your reply. I have been enjoying reading everyone's helpful thoughts and experiences. The issue with the garage is that it is full of lots of stuff. We both went out to inspect and see if we could put a hutch in, and we could definitely do that. But that is...

    Outside housing

My piggies live in my shed. They have a hutch in the shed which is constantly open. I have newspaper and hay in the hutch itself (so they’ve always got something to forage through and eat) but fleece on the shed floor (with a waterproof layer down first, then an absorbent layer, then the...

    Outdoor shelter in winter

Thanks for all the comments and advice. I do have a thermometer in the hutch so have been able to keep a watchful eye on how cool it gets. I am also considering a low wattage tubular heater which will be positioned high on the wall within the hutch so that they can’t reach it.

I personally wouldn’t use towels anyway - they don’t tend to dry quickly enough outside and can leak through from one layer to the next. However, in winter using any kind of fabric outside in a shed can cause problems as the damp air means it absorbs. I can only use fleece items in my shed...

    Guinea Pigs in Bedrooms?

Amazing! That step looks fab! How often do you put them in their playpen? And do you keep their hutch in the garage throughout the summer? Where is your run from? AND, do you also ever put them outside on the grass with a secure run? Thank you! :)

    Engel's Herd

There’s no need to put the newspaper under the correx. Mine was always just plastic lining, newspaper and then hay. My new hutch is different so I just use a good layer of aubiose and then hay on top now. Cheap hay is fine for bedding but you still need to make sure it’s nice, green and non...

    Hutch advice please

Thanks - yes, that is helpful. I’d really like them to live outdoors while the weather is good as they’ll have more space than I can offer indoors. We’re in Oxfordshire so pretty lucky with the weather (most of the time). I’m aware the hutch isn’t the most substantial ever and I don’t expect it...

    Holiday cage

He has some hardboard and then puts newspapers over the top and then the bedding (hay) over that. I think some people use shower curtains as the waterproof base and then papers or fleece on top. Exciting news about the new pigs arrival!

two new piggies, one is being a bully

Please dont feed kale or spinach often - while it is safe for them, it is too high in calcium to feature regularly in their diet. High calcium foods such as kale, spinach and parsley needs to be kept limited to one small piece once per week only. Too much calcium can contribute to the...
