Hi all.
My bloat prone sow finally got a diagnosis a few days ago, giardia! A parasite that my vet found after looking at poop samples. She was started on Flagyl 0.3ml twice a day for 3 days, so 6 doses. We have had dose 5. Also on infacol.
Now the last time she pooped was a good 4/5 hours ago...
One of my piggies tested positive for Giardia quite a few years ago. As all six of my guinea pigs had been in the garden eating grass which is where the vet thought it could have been picked up from they were all treated with Panacur. They had the liquid version and the vet worked out the dose...

As to giardia treatment, I am linking in @piggieminder for you, who has personal practical experience with that bug in one of her own piggies.
...on by foxes it would be a good idea to get the poop tested for parasites/worms.
They can last in the soil for months and in the case of giardia 18 months. Removing the poop from the grass will not remove any parasites that may have made their way onto the grass or into the soil. One of mine...
Hello! Looking for some gut-related advice. Around one month ago all of my girls were treated for Giardia infection (poop tested positive during a routine screening prior to boarding while we were travelling). We don't know which girl was ill, but towards the end of the Giardia treatment Hayley...
Is she confirmed as clear of the giardia?
These kinds of infections aren’t something we come across on the forum often
It sounds like her gut isn’t at full function, and is sent off balance by the veg.
Have you removed all veg and only reintroduced very slowly?
Is she still on the probiotic...
...while I'm travelling and one of my girls (2.5 - 3 years old) seems to be going through a series of health issues. She tested positive for Giardia infection during a routine pre-boarding faecal analysis, so she was treated for this. Within a couple of days of starting the Giardia medication...
Thank you for replying so quickly! All three were tested for Giardia and were clear. I completely agree that her gut still doesn't seem right as each time she has veg, her poops are soft. I then cut veg out and within a couple of days things are closer to normal, but a bit crumbly.
The vet...
...Sterile cystitis (similar to cats whose treatment for feline sterile cystitis it follows) has a link to a high stress default setting.
The giardia and its treatment have likely temporarily lowered the immune system so the body is currently under higher stress/not quite as good to fend off...
...or parasites? Sorry if you have said and I've forgotten. If he hasn't had his poop tested that's the way I would go next. I had a boar with giardia and worms once who had soft poop, all piggies in house were treated and sot poop cleared up quickly after that.
I'm not an H&I expert but if he...
I've only come across worms once, when one of our rescue babies had Giardia infection. We were prescribed Panacur and followed vet instructions strictly. We saw good results
...the same applies when it persists.
Generally panacur is used against the majority of those while flagyl antibiotic is effective against giardia (we have only seen one or two cases of this in nearly 20 years; it's much more common in places with a bad/unsafe water supply).
The most extreme...
Thank you so much.
He’s being syringe fed and given fluids, and is being encouraged to eat his own food too (which is the only good update really - he’s been nibbling a bit more).
He survived his GA! He is definitely not out of the woods but it was a big possibility he wouldn’t make it...
...up painting them with Johnstones? water based paint which worked really well. I eventually went over to fleece hides after the piggies got giardia and the wooden hides had to be disposed of. I'm now trying painted wooden ones again in one of my cages as I'm trying to cut down on washing. The...
...£800 later the vet suggested a faecal sample. As this was going to be a further £200 she suggested giving him Panacur first to treat Giardia in case this was the issue. I’ve stopped syringe feeding him critical care and his weight seems to stay around 920-960g now, before it had dropped to...

We had one case of Giardia parasite with one of our pigs (rescued from poor conditions), but the symptoms did not fit what you’re describing.
Please follow the excellent advice you’ve had above, and get an appointment with the vet.
:agr: As @Siikibam said, worms are rare. I’ve had one piggie with a Giardia infection but this can only be identified with lab analysis following a vet visit.
Intestinal worm burden is common in larger mammals but not so much piggies or rodents.
It is of utmost importance than you get the...

As said above, excellent advice you have been given.
I agree that it could be an issue in relation to where the piggy has come from. One of ours had a parasite (GIardia) infection very young as a result of a careless breeder.
Definitely a vet check up needed.
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Rosie.
When my pigs had Giardia and worms the vet told me they may have come from the grass they eat but equally they could have come from the breeder in one of them and then been passed on, we will never know!
