all piggies were fine yesterday went i went to bed, and this morning at breakfast- time (4,30am) a few didnt show up straight away (presumed they were sleeping, when they finally appeared they looked a little sluggish but nothing to cause concern, or so i thought)

ive just got home from work and am heart broken to find 1 youngster (around 4 months old) has died this morning, and my 'special' rescue piggy Mojito is not a well piggy at all. the dead piggy was in the same cage as mojito so i think its connected.
both mojitos eyes were, i thought, closed. but they were stuck together with a slight crispy discharge. no discharge from her nose or mouth, no raspy/wheezy/coughy sounds, but her breathing is not right, its short breaths which make her sides really go in and out a few times, then back to regular breathing, then short sharp breaths again....
she is refusing her pellets and hay but has had a slight nibble of banana, now she is back hiding under the hay. she's wheeky but it is a weak sound wheek (as if she has a sore throat?) she is not lethargic, if i rattle a plastic bag she comes running and begs, but wont really eat.

I'm going to get to the vets asap but have to at least wait until the kids come home from school first (dont have anyone else that can collect them for me)

anything i can give mojito now or is it best to wait and see what the vets say? i would like to at least clean up her eyes or give her something to keep her more comfortable. my first thought was URI but seeing as theres no wheezing

oh no, you poor thing, i have no advice sorry, just wanted to send special wishes and hope all the others are ok.

Rip to the little lost one xxxxxx

So sorry to hear you've lost a little one and Mojito is poorly too.

All I can say is to give some fluids if you can, or some watery veg like cucumber to keep the fluid levels up, hopefully the trip to the vet will be successful. I assume the vet will give antibiotics so a probiotic will also be needed, possibly some syringe feeding too. My fingers are crossed for you both.

My thought is still URI - you do not always get all the symptoms.

Sorry for your loss, and best of luck for Mojito.

does sound like a chest infection... she sounds like she is recessing as well which means she is working very hard to breath and may need oxygen therapy in a oxygen tank x

Striking that quickly and possibly being contagious...it could be Bordetella - especially with the crispy/gummy eyes - however it could also be adenovirus (I hope not)

Be careful this doesn;t spread - so quarantine and adopt stringent measures to protect the rest of your piggies. Hanlde healthy piggies first before Mojito....and wash everything after handling Mojito....can you put him in a different room/area to your toehrs?

In view of your situation with multiple piggies, it is definitely worth considering getting a culture done immediately from Mojito (throat and nasal swab) to find out what you;re dealing with and it;s sensitivity to the various anitioitics.....i.e. [*]before[/*] he gets his first dose of antibioitics....(as afterwards you won;t be able to do this)

I hope it;s jut a standard bug that can be wiped out by baytril.

Paws all croseed for you here.

x
