My youngest male (george) and oldest male (smidge) just wont get along, they fight all the time and teeth chattering, at the moment they both live in different hutches with their girls next to them. But in the run, georgy is always chattering his teeth and fighting with smidge, he is being netured next week or hopefully the week after, but he doesnt seem to like smidge unless their are no females around. help?

Re: 2 boys are fighting

My neutered boy is like that with one of my girls at the mo. I'm putting mine down to the fact they dont know each other.
Perhaps yours is trying to be top pig!?

If they were my guineas, I'd stop putting them in the run before they cause real damage to each other. It's obvious that they aren't happy together when there are girls nearby...and that is the way it generally is. Many boars will live happily, but if they can see or smell females that soon changes...in my experience.

As you probably know, neutering will not affect their behaviour, so I presume you doing it so that he can go in with the sows?
Are you going to neuter the other boar too? Or is he too old?

Barbara

I take they are going to live with girlies as they're being neutered? Castration only has a minimal effect on some guineas, not enough to change behaviour in a big way. I would just seperate them if it were me and never put them together. Sounds like they're trying to tell you something so why force the issue?

just looked up on google and seen that they must be split up. So, we are going pets at home later, and georgy and fluffly are moving into a bigger hutch and will be adding in more little females in time for him so he can start his own family. in the kitchen run at the moment, they are leaving poor little georgy out. its so sad :( i gave him a cuddle. fluffly has stuck with the herd of course. but later on we are going to buy some permanet hutches 4 them both. So the 2 herds can live sepreatley. its a shame! that was meant 2 be going to some new clothes :( my dad shrunk he others in the wash ! :(

Aaaaw, i do love your little Fuffly :-* Hope all goes well with the two of them. Another option would be to go to a rescue and let the boys choose their own girlfriends... Glad its sorted :)

:'( its really sad, i had so many plans, they had a new hutch on the way, and now they cant share it, I'm using some of the hutch money to get them both something nice. that is big enough to live in and put in a toy and a bed. they are both living in temporary hutches at the moment. a small narrow one which no toys can be put in, and a 2 storey one, just a little bit bigger with the extra floor underneath. I'm hoping to get them a relativeley big hutch, but most of them you have to build up. so that will keep me going until midnight *yay*

... so you will end up with 2 castrated boars who each have their own sows, seperately, right? or totally wrong!

bout right, ill have 2 boars, living happily with their ladies and hopefully some other females in the herd has time goes by....lets hope no pregauncies, or'll ill be having the same issue agen ;D oh dear!

I hope everything goes OK for you. A boar and group of sows is my favourite combination, not always the easiest but its nice when you have a well established group :)

And we'll all keep our fingers crossed for you that George doesn't manage to get Fluffly pregnant in the next couple of weeks or you will be needing even more hutches ;)

I take it you are getting the boys castrated before putting them in with the ladies? ?

lmao! georgy hasn't made a move on the 2 girls yet. hes got a charm 4 fluffly though.

Right, lets see if I got this all right.

You have two boars, which obviously wont get along with each other if there are girls around.

So you want to split them up, into two groups, with 1 boar and a few sows each. Sounds good.

You are going to have George neutered, so he wont be getting your girls pregnant (you realise he will have to sit without girls for three weeks approx. after he has been neutered? he is still able to do a "last shot" so to say ;) )

What about Smidge? Is he going to get neutered too?

From another post somewhere on the forum I read that you have seperated george from the girls now. Is Smidge sitting seperate aswell?

I wish you good luck, if everything goes to plan, you should have two very happy piggy families in a few weeks, with two very lucky boars, having their own little harem :)

Smidge is already neutured.
Georgy living into a seperate now, a breacon one. the vet reopens on tuesday so we are going to call them then. check out my post on the general chat called 'my piggy family has grown'
