2 piggies to the vet today :(

OK - heard back from the vets. Two doses of 6ml each. Not what I expected, but he's a very well regarded vet for guinea pigs so I guess we'll go with it!

She really isn't a Sulfatrim fan, but I think the Little Miss is joining the club of Metacam junkies

I’ve had larger doses than that of metacam twice daily for a short period when required and no harm has come to my piggies. Just thought I’d reassure you of that.

How's Felix, @VickiA ?

Back to the vets today for a review. Nearly cancelled, as Jemima's eye seemed absolutely fine and Fudge seemed much improved - but then she coughed a couple more times so we figured it was worth having a review.

Fudge's breathing is better in that she doesn't breathe with a click anymore, but she still coughs on a tracheal pinch - and he felt the cough she didn't was somehow not quite the kind of cough he's used to hearing. But she IS improving, so Plan A is to stick with the Sulfatrim & Metacam and he'll brainstorm with the senior Piggy vet and let me know options by the end of next week. He thought her heart sounded fine, but couldn't rule out issues deeper in her lungs amongst other things. Further investigation from here would probably be X-Rays under anaesthetic.

Jemima had gone for the ride, so he offered to have a quick check of her eye - and deemed it fine, wonderful even :). And then he looked at her teeth... Since their first visit after we got them, Jemima's been a bit prone to have one of her lower molars try and overgrow but it didn't seem to be getting worse and she's certainly managing to eat well enough! However, he had a good feel and said he was concerned that her molars seemed to be thickening and there was an indication of some pain there, and also something not quite normal about her TM joints. His suspicion is that her future will, at some point, included dental issues - we're not there yet, but we need to be observant. Again, investigation would be X-Rays under anaesthetic - which we could opt to do now, using the logic that (a) its useful to have a reference set and (b) by the time we recognise there's an issue its likely her body will already be under some strain, at which point the anaesthetic has more risk attached. His guess was that there was likely to be more awry than just the visible molar issue, but without investigation he wouldn't like to speculate too much on what - although he did say that it was possible much of the management could be done with the right drugs.

So I'm gently reeling! And foreseeing the potential for a rather substantial vet bill. And a LOT of Metacam...

Any thoughts, comments, similar experiences gladly received.

Since we picked up our girls after Christmas we noticed that Jemima seemed to be closing her L eye a bit, and we'd heard Fudge making a strange coughing noise and some odd clicking as well - so off to the vets we went.

Jemima's eyes got some dye and an inspection - no obvious issues damage, but her L sclera was showing significantly more veining than that on her R. So we've a tube of antibiotic eye drops for her. First dose has gone in, and Jemima is an excellent patient!

Fudge got listened to every which way and he suggested various options, the most basic being a URI so that's what we're treating for a week. We've Sulfatrim and Metacam for her. If she's not much improved then he'll be thinking that the symptoms are secondary to an issue that's either deeper in her lungs or to do with her heart or some kind of pleural issue - but we're all hoping she's going to improve!

** Quick question - the instructions on the Metacam are ambiguous and I was hoping someone could advise what's more likely while we wait for the Vet to confirm:
We have 1.5mg/ml dog Metacam and the label he printed says "Dose twice daily for 0.6ml with food". We /think/ that's two doses of 0.3ml each (total 0.6ml across the day), but it's not entirely clear - can anyone help? **

(She didn't mind the Metacam. She Did Not Like the Sulfatrim...)
Why don't you phone your vet if you're unsure of the medication dosage?

Good to have the update @Tangle .
It sounds as if you have an excellent vet who is trying to keep well on top of possible issues.
I don’t have any direct experience of the issues you are coping with - only with hefty vet bills!

By the way Felix passed away a few days ago, just so that you are aware.
