Hi all,
1) my 3 boars live indoors, have done since dec when webgot them as babies. Trouble is they are beginning to smell of testosterone filled boys so would like to mice them to our outdoor hutch soon for the summer. How warm does it have to be? What months do you usually go by?
2) they have been having unlimited hay and pellets with twice daily veg. When do I start to limit either or both the hey and pellets? They are 5 months old.
All my guinea pigs live outside all year round! We move them to the garage if it is particularly cold, but as we can't have them indoors due to lack of space/my mum's allergies, my girls live outside.
You can put them out now if you want. I'd wait till we get a few good days in a row to let them acclimatise themselves to the weather and the different temperature, but once you've done that they should be fine to live outdoors .
Hay wise they can have unlimited all the time, they need it in fact. Pellets I believe they have unlimited until they're fully grown but I'm not too sure about that!
Veggies, 50g/1 cup a day for them (I think mine get more, but they're spoilt rotten!).
yepo they should be ok to be outside now it is nice and warm but as already said i would check the forecast and make sure it is due to be warm. we have still had a couple of frosts down here. for the first few days give them oodles of hay to help keep them warm. diet wise they should have unlimited hay always. nuggets wise when they get to about 12 months they only need an egg cup full really as their natural diet would be hay/grass. techinically they shouldn't need nuggets but they like them and they have additives which help keep them healthy. and 50g/cup of veggies a day. remeber thaqt they will attract flies when they areoutside so keep their cage clean and it is advisable to get a insecticide spray to help keep flies away or get some fly netting to put over the cage. x
It's the nights that can get chilly, so ensure they have loads of hay, a thick quality hutch out of the wind and cover over the hutch at night making sure they have an air gap of course
I was told limit pellets at 9 months, my sows are that ge and they are getting too fat on unlimited pellets so they have limited, endless hay and veg now
They should be fine to live outside anytime now. it shouldnt be too cold for them now. Maybe you could get them used to it in the day if your worried about them being cold before putting them outside full time. I dont know what months i would go by, but some people like to pop them into a shed/unused garage in the winter months. I would only limit the pellets if your piggies are a bit chubby, but they should always have unlimited hay available.
mine have been outside for 3 or 4 weeks now day and night (although they hadnt been inside previously), they have oodles of hay available and I give them as much food as the small bowls will hold - but usually refresh every other day
