2.if i put my gerbil in a running ball thing could i hold the ball in the piggs play pen with them so they can meet , i hav held her up to their cage and they dont seem scared:{

Yes the leads are cruel, they are very nervous creatures and it will terrify them, also with regards to the gerbil, they really shouldn't be together, even in the ball.

Hope that helps. :)

Piggie leads aren't advised for piggies and are a waste of money. Piggies hate them and generally just wriggle out them, not to mention you could hurt them!

Why would you want them to meet? :{ I wouldn't bother, you never know what diseases could spread!

Guinea pigs do not have as flexible spines as other animals. A lead can seriously damage their spine and cause a lot of pain.

It is better, if you left gerbils and guinea pigs apart.

I agree, guinea pigs spines are very delicate so a lead should never be placed on them,
I think its also safe to say no species should mix so no i wouldnt introduce him to the gerbils

I used to have a lead for mine, she'd just lay there. I really think there should be warning or something, its terrible reading this and knowing i used tro try and use one :(

I have one for Fred obviously one of those impulse buys before I knew they were bad, I put it on him once and he wriggled out... then I binned it! We live and learn so don't feel bad, I'm sure no long term damage was done! They are the most pointless inventions ever!

I admit, I bought leads and harnesses for mine but I swear they are still in the packaging! I was going to use them for vet visits but knowing how much they apparently hate the leads, I won't use them. I am also not going to sell them on either because I don't want to encourage other people using them!

Vet visit? Thats hillarious Jen! I was going to use mine to let Fred out the back obviously supervised. :))! Clearly I won't be doing this! LOL

Well not just vet visits, to walk around the house too. :o :... :red

I am ashamed but glad to say I am far more clued up now! ") :(|)

We bought one years ago before we knew it was bad. But it was obvious as soon as we put it on Pixie that it distressed her and it would be bad so we binned it.

I was walking home from the train station after work one night last month and it was about 11.20pm and what should I come across but someone out walking their ferret on a lead! I thought it was a tiny dog at first, but it was definately a ferret! I was going to stop and say hello to it, but the lady didn't make eye contact and hurried away so I just carried on walking. But it was the last thing I expected to see at nearly mignight on my street!

is it also crule to dress them up

i might bye some hats or little vests for them for photos and stuff id this crulemallethead

well

i have seen a boy with a piggy on a leed i didnt have the confordance to tell him off though.

Wee hats wouldn't create to much of a problem, but you may have a problem keeping them on, but what you could do is edit them in photobucket and add your hats that way and saves money :)!

I wouldn't put vests on them! They could get stuck or hurt there legs!

ferrets do very well on the lead lol. I have 2 boys (Walter and Ally), and they love to go for walks on their leads. See the pictures below for proof lol. :(|)

But I certainly wouldn't dream of putting my guineas on them!

well you have learnt now thats the main thing;),i never did buy one as i found this site 3 days into my piggy ownership so i learnt before i could,my mum also taught me that no small furries aside from ferrets should have a lead or harness,i couldnt agree more,i know somepeople use them for buns but i dont think i would

I'm surprised you were shocked by the sight of ferrets on leads, I thought that was one of their biggest appeals to some people, hehe!

I have a lead for my ferret, but I dont walk her I just put the harness on her when I'm to busy to watch her with an eagle eye when she is loose in my flat, then I can tell roughly how much havok she is causing without following her around. I do use the lead for vet visits though, hehe. I feel a bit daft having her on the lead tbh, but it helps the vet.

I cant imagine why anyone would want to put a pig on a lead though (physical delicacy aside), to me, it makes no sense, non of my 4 have ever been the sort of animal that would walk along with you, they were tame, but not tame to point they would walk along next to a giant in any sort of orderly manner. To skittish. Ive always felt trying to walk rabbits was a bit of a daft idea too personally.

I'm just really worried about why you would even want to concider putting a hat or a coat onto your guinea pig at all?
Its not like they have no fur and therefore would benefit from wearing one, it just sounds like that would be for your benifit only than anything else :/

And just let your guinea pig run arounds itself, i'm pretty sure it wouldnt want to be controlled and pulled around by a lead.

And as for getting your gerbil and guineapig to meet theres really no need to even try, honestly, they would most probally just be scared of each other.. they wouldn't meet in the wild, infact i pretty sure a gerbil would attack a guinea pig?

No, i think you need to abandon all those ideas, unless your willing to pay for alot of vet bills from when your gerbil attacks your guinea pig, or from when the guinea pig injures iself from trying to get out of its lead :P - not to metion the stress caused by it all :/

Noo not good ideas >__< their not toys!

well

:))rolleyesi was going to put the hats on them just for photos and my piggys would probably attack the gerbil and if you read what i said * would see i was considering putting the gibil ansind a running ball and holding it up to them for a few secouds and i never even considered puting my babys on leeds i just wanted to know if you guys thought the leeds were crule aswell

Ok calm down a little please people are only offering their opinions (and concerns), you obviously care a lot for your piggies as you come on here and ask for advice which is good but you need to be willing to listen to peoples responses even if you do not necessarily agree with them.

My piggies have had little hats on their heads but I would never consider putting clothing on them as I know it would both stress and distress them and I would be doing it for my benefit and not theirs and the welfare of my piggies always comes first and I would hate to distress them in anyway I want them to be happy and content particularly as two are rescues and may not of had the best starts in their lives. Never the less caring for a piggy is a huge responsibility as you are responsible for every aspect of its welfare. I am very proud of the fact that I have three happy, contented and loved to bits piggies who are a huge part of my life. The first few weeks of being a piggy mum can be hard as you get to know your pigs, their likes and dislikes, their behaviour and so forth its also very tough for them as they are naturally timid creatures and they need to get to know you and their new surroundings and start to feel safe and happy in their new environment. I personally don't think trying to put clothing on them which will only serve to stress them will help this process at all, in fact it will hinder it.

As for putting leads on them, before I joined this forum I did have one piggy who I had a lead for at first she slipped out, when I got it to fit it felt incredibly cruel my 8stone against a 3lb piggy, when I tried to pull her back I felt I was hurting her and so I immediately stopped using it and binned it, I think they are very cruel and not good for the piggy concerned. If you want to retrieve a piggy rattle its food bag. Though they should always be closely supervised when they are out their cage.

As for Gerbil meeting piggies, why? It is going to be off no benefit to either animal as one can not offer companionship to the other and may well, as already stated for a number of reasons be dangerous to either piggy or gerbil or both.

Sorry if this has seemed like a lecture, it isn't intended that way.

I don't understand what you expect to get from showing your gerbil to your pigs while it is in it's ball. {:|

Ive shown my hamster to my pigs while it was in its ball, well not exactly 'shown' but its been runing around in its ball in the same room as their playpen etc while ive been cleaning all my pets out, and it has stopped for a rest, as they do, by the playpen and the pigs showed no interest whatsoever. My pigs arent interested in anything bar food.
