I heard this somewhere, someone please explain? I'm thinking of getting a third piggy, am building a 2 x 4 grid but the second floor has exactly 3/4 the floor area of the first floor, it's built in a big cantilevered 'you' shape..

Well i think its to do with if all 3 pigs were on the same level they wouldnt have enough space. If you get what i mean? As a 4x3 is suitable for 3 piggys and if they were on a 4x2 level its too small.

Does that help?

:)

The hay barn is going to be downstairs but the fresh veg dining area is up, so hopefully they all won't be at the same place at the same time. I'll see how it goes. That's the beauty of C&C, it is not a big deal to reconfigure and add on, but I'm going to wait and see.
Put a deposit on a little Texel sow just now, she is tricolored and too cute.

The way I think of the floor space thing is if your piggies refuse to us the upper level, then the floor area would be too small. For example, in theory this cage on zooplus should be able to house 6 piggies as it is recommended that a 120 is the minimum for 2 piggies, so across the three floors, 6 piggies should be ok with 2 on each floor. However if your 6 piggies refused to go up a level and they all stayed on the lowest tier, it wouldn't be big enough at all.

I personally think that if all piggies us the different levels, then you can class it as floor space.

Thanks for the explanation. I do go out of my way to provide yummy fresh veg so I'm sure they will be up there at least for that.
Now I'm going to have to research how to introduce the new sow, but she won't be here for a few weeks so I have plenty of time. And by that time the C&C palatial abode will be complete.

Sounds great :) Lots of research is always good, there are lots of pics of C&C cages on http:\\www.guineapigcages.com if you haven't seen them yet andwant some inspiration :D

I understood it as being floor space beiing the space they have to exercise, there it has to be in one level. If you have the required minimum space on different levels they can not run about in this space.

A hay loft or feeding area therefore, is extra space not exercise space.

My trio of sows have a 2x5 with a 1x2 upstairs hayloft 2x5 being the minimum area they need.

My three tend to all sleep in the 1x2 area, so it's not them all being in the same area that is the problem, it is the fact that guinea pigs like to run about quite fast they can not do this if the area is split on two levels.

That said these are 'recommended areas' I do know people who have slightly smaller cages as there piggies are in runs or have floor space for most of the day.

Hope this helps :)
