Is it possible to have 4 male guinea pigs? Just wondering this has kind of become an obsession other than the pesky vet visits.

Hi! Welcome to the forum.

Male guinea pigs can only be kept in pairs in an appropriate sized cage. Four males kept in the same cage will not work out as they will all fight. If you do want four males, you can have a pair in one cage and the other pair in a different cage. Hopefully I answered your question. 😀

:wel:

Not four in one cage, no, I’m afraid not. Boars do much better in pairs. So you could have two separate pairs
if you were to try to keep four boars together, fights would occur and you could potentially end up with all four of them needing to live in separate cages as single piggies.

The only way to be able to try to have a functioning boar herd is to have around 10 boars but they would need a 10 square metre room to stand any chance

I have two sets of boys in two different cages side by side

Years ago I tried 4 boys together after the pet shop said it would be fine. I just put them all together in a cage. Bad advice. They all fell out and ended up swapping pairs. So I split them into two pairs and then they fell out too! So they all lived in four separate cages. Not ideal. Don’t try a boar quartet.

Somehow four of my past boars succeeded as a quartet! I think this is because they were all super chill. This included 8 week old Baulder, Bear, and Loki bonded to one year old Thor. 😁

Great advice above - I wouldn't recommend it now. 🙂

The only grouping more likely to fail than a boar trio is a boar quad. Sad but true.

You could keep 2 pairs in close proximity but entirely separate. That would work.

It’s not absolutely impossible to keep a bachelor group but it depends on their age, temperament and the amount of space available. In the rescue a while back we did have a group of long term resident boars in a quad. They were each well over 2 years old when introduced and each had a very laid back attitude. And none of them could be rehomed due to various conditions, so we kept them as residents. They were started as a pair, then over time another one was bonded to them and some time later the fourth. It’s never been possible to recreate this after they passed and nor would we ever attempt it again. It was just a one off group of older individuals who all managed to live happily together.
