hello i am new to guinea pigs and have a few questions!
1....what food type is best for them?i currently have burgess supa guinea.is that ok
2....do they need any vitamin supplements?they get plenty of fresh greens etc but do they need anything else?
3....what bedding materials.they have hay at the mo but what else could i use?
4....do they chew things like gerbils do?and what can i get them to chew on if needed
5....what kinda toys etc could i get them?
;D

Hiya,

1. I give mine 5/6 veggies per day. A Green veg such as Kale, cabbage, occassionally lettuce then other foods such as green pepper, celery, cucumber, carrots, corn, green beans. Look at veggies on here under the food section. I give mine burgess too and they love it. Pellets are better than mix because their is no selective feeding.
2. Pigs don't need supplemented water.
3. If pigs are indoors you could use fleece bedding such as vet bed, pro fleece or fleece blankets. Megazorb, Carefresh, Hay and newspaper are alternatives for outdoors.
4. Pigs always like to gnaw on things to keep their teeth down I provide willow balls and plenty of good quality fresh hay.
5. Depends on your pigs but mine don't bother with toys, they have gnawing galands, play veg and herb blocks (from pampered piggies) and they hardly touch them, but toys along those sort of lines would be fine. :)

Yeah Pampered Piggies website is fab - usually next day delivery. Very high quality products. I recently bought my piglet a couple of chew toys from them - a carrot and corn cob thingy - he devoured them!

Their willow balls are great for stuffing with hay/grasses/greens and the piggies can't come to any harm if they eat the willow too.

I agree re the pellets - lots of guineas will pick and choose out of a mixed feed but with any pellets you know they're getting all the goodness and nutrients.

When introducing any new foods add a little at a time until they get used to them. This is most important with regard to greens and grasses in the Spring.

Good luck with your new piglets and feel free to ask any questions at all - the silliest question is the one that's never asked!

This is a great forum (better than any other I've been on) and there are loads of helpful, friendly, hugely knowledgeable members.

Welcome! :smitten:

1) super guinea is apparently good. i feed my boys veg twice a day, in the morning and in the night. theres a good list of veg in the food section :)
2) dont bother with supplements. they should get all they need from the veg
3)there a loads of bedding options, have a read through reviews in bedding section and see if you like the sound of any :) i use megazorb s its so absorbant and cheap, and put hay on top. hay is a good choice of bedding though.
4) most like to chew, and willow balls/sticks etc are good for this, or toilet roll tubes stuffed with hay, however some pigs just arent interested (like my boys) so i just make sure they have plenty of hay and readigrass
5)best toys are tubes and tunnels as they love them in my opinion

cool thanks for all the help.at the moment they are indoors in a huge cage(we are getting a outdoor run too).i am using woodshavings at the mo and would love to get them a snuggly blanket for bedding but i find the woodshavings end up sticking to the blanket/fleece.do you get that or do you use something other than woodshavings?

if your wanting to give them blankets why not use fleece bedding, or vetbed/profleece?

i think most people put newspaper underneath to absorb the pee, as it drains through the fleece/vetbed meaning that the piggies arent laying in their own pee. and would be ok for you to add a snuggle blanket :)

pampered piggies is great....spent nearly £30 already......ssshhhh dont tell other half!

I line the hutch with newspapers, fleece blanket on top (with newspaper between the layers for increased absorbency), then tons of shredded paper in the bedroom compartment. I daily poop scoop and change the blanket twice weekly (only 1 piggy). It works really well, the piggy's feet aren't hurt by harsh shavings, no allergies, no dusty "dust-free" shavings, less time to clean out, and best of all it's as cheap as chips!
