I found a little lump on Gizmo's bottom this morning, well, his upper leg perhaps, close to his bottom. It's about the size of a pea. It feels fluid-y, so I'm hoping its nothing serious, and he didn't seem to feel it when I was checking it out and is acting normally.

I've never found a lump on a pig before, but I didn't notice it yesterday, so I'm thinking its come up quite quickly. It also doesn't see to have a 'head' so I don't think its a bite. Has anyone else got any ideas what this might be? I can take him to the vets on Wednesday if needed.

it could be a cyst. One of my guinea pigs years ago had one so i took him to the vets and she said it would be fine and it wasn't. He should of had it lanced. i would take him to the vets early on now you.ve discovered it.

Hope you get to the bottom of this with Gizmo and he's okay hun.

"I think cysts, they just float to the top of the body:{! see the vet ASAP!
Good luck! "

pigpig479, have you ever seen or dealt with a cyst?
The section in bold is total and utter nonsense.

From your description it would seem to be a sebaceous cyst.
They are, usually, more of a nuisance than anything else.
They can be drained/removed or left alone until such time that they get big enough to need removing. Sometimes the cyst will burst and there will be a discharge of a thick white material.
A cyst can be removed quite easily, there is no need to give the pig a general anaesthetic for this procedure.

(I do have "hands on" experience of dealing with guinea pig cysts.)

I've got experience in dealing with cysts on all other animals, just never had a pig! To be honest, it doesn't feel like a worry, it feels like a draining job to me.

To all those screaming get him to the vet, he will be there on Wednesday. I just hope the vet is there this time. I had to take my dog last Wednesday and she never managed to get here because the roads were closed (we have a mobile vet who travels 50 miles to get here).

I don't think they are "screaming" at you re taking him to a vet, not at all. You know when your pigs condition is serious and when it's not...we can only go on descriptions. From the description you give it is clear it is unlikely to be an urgent problem, but for the sake of legalities and the fact that we cannot see the pigs ourselves, when you ask for advice or ideas on health matters people will generally recommend that you seek a vets advice sooner rather than later. Different people will have different opinions on when to contact a vet, and they will say so in different ways. But don't feel anyone was screaming at you, I don't believe anyone intended it that way.

I agree it does sound like a sebaceous cyst. Is it just above his bottom, on his rump? In the grease gland area?

Thanks, its on his rump, I'm not sure where the gland area is, but if its in the same place as hamsters, then its around the glad area.

The Sisterhood strikes again!

S/he who shouts loudest gets noticed, or is it ignored?
