Hello all, firstly i havent been on here much recently, so i would like to say sorry. What with moving house and pregnancy, i have been more of a reader than a poster!

Firstly i have a male guinea pig, who i have had for 4-5 months, he was born in June 2007, so is nearly a year old. He currently lives on his own,he came from a friend of mine who had previously bred from him (i believe only once through whether the original breeder bred from him i dont know, as she lives in Germany?!). I have friends who have breed their males and have quite happily moved a baby male in with them and they have co-habited happily. However i have never kept a bred from boar with another boar. For many years i have successful kept boars with boars and have not had any trouble.

He lives in the house so has human company, but when ever he hears my other boars squeaking he starts to squeak and wheek, if he hears another piggie on the tv, he does the same. I have never had this behaviour before as i dont keep Guineas on there own as a rule, due to their social nature.

Apart from one or two friends i dont know anyone else who has introduced a young male in with a bred from boar and was just wondering if any one has done this? If he hadnt been bred from i wouldnt have a problem, because of my past experiences. Its just the bred from bit thats stopping me!

Hi Aim,

I have a bred from boar called Radley (he is only a babe at 4 months) and is getting on well with my other Aby Sunshine who is 10 months. I never thought it would be a problem because he has been bred from?

Your boar while be around 9 months now and I think that is a perfect age to get a young friend. Maybe you can take your pig to a rescue and he can choose a friend himself.

Good luck, hope the move went well and you are ok,

Louise

Everything should be fine, I'd agree with Lousie and take him along and you can see who he gets on with. If you are worried about putting him with another boar (even though this shouldn't be a problem) you could always get him castrated and get a young female for him. I'd give the rescue boar a go first though. x

I agree Sarah. I have one more boar to pair up with a baby and if that doesn't work I will get him neutered to live with my girls (or get another girl for him) it's worth a try with the boar to avoid unecessery surgery. :)

I had been told by someone that they can be alittle more dominate, and was alittle worried. I feel so guilty because he seems so lonely, that probarly sounds silly. but i think he is! I two other boars, i have no sows atm,i have had to cut down on the piggies due to personal reasons. So i just have the three now. Elvis is probarly around 6-months old and he lives with the son of the guinea on his own! They seem to have a good relatiuonship, so i would probarly get another piggie so not to rock the boat with them two! The RSPCA by me never seems to have any piggies for rescue, i have rang them so many times.

Thanks both for yor replies! xx

Where about are you located? Guinea Pig Rehome may be your best bet to find a rescue in your area. :)

Radley has never been with a boar before he have in to Sunshine straight away so he was never dominate. I think it depends on the pig rather than if they have been bred from. Poor Radley he was in with a gang of females (previous owners didn't think they would breed ::)) so I'm not sure he knows how to react around other males.

Good luck with your boar. :)

Not far from me I'm in Wrexham :) I've just bonded 2 boars a 14 month old lad with a 6 month lad, they are getting on just great :).. I found they need space they do like to get away from each other sometimes..

I have a 7 month old foster piggie that's looking for a home, he's in the rescue bit under Jack he's stunning :smitten: :smitten: I'm not sure how that would work though. I was told to bond with a very young boar like 8 weeks saying that though my bonding seemed to work ..

Louise have you any youngsters there ? your keeping the young boar aren't you ?

Karen,

I've only got Ant and Dec and they are bonded. Yep I'm keeping Radley. Will keep my eyes peeled though! :)
