My mum (bless her heart) has brought my boys a Christmas pressie, I am sooooo touched by this as she really isn't an animal person, the tag on the present read "For the boys!(Yes I am as daft as you!)" :))

Anyway, she brought them a new water bottle, a wooden carrot thing to gnaw on and some:

-Supreme, stickle treats (popcorn) - These are like stick things that clip onto the wire of the cage. The ingredients say: "wheat, maize, sorghrum, sunflower seeds, popcorn, carrot, cabbage, sugar, vegetable oil, honey, peas.

and some

Fold Hill Fruity Crunchies - These look like little cookies, green and red in colour. The ingredients say: "wheat, apple, blackcurrant, apricot, vegetable oil, sugar beet flake. with ec permitted colourants"

Can I give theese things to my piggies or should I not? It's not something they have ever had before (or not since they've been with us anyway)

Thank you

x

They are not ideal, as they contain lots of sugar, fat (in the grain) and artificial colourings. However, if it is necessary for the peace of the family, they won't suffer too much just for this once! (My piggies were never that keen on them when I tried them out years ago).

Perhaps you can tell your mother about the new healthy treats for your boys you have (just!) discovered sometime in the next year... ;)

It is a lovely gesture of your mother's, though!

It isn't essential for family peace. I don't live with my mum. My OH and I have our own house with our piggies and hamster :) so Mum won't really know if we don't give them the treats. My initial thought was no, I shouldn't give them but then I thought maybe the odd one wouldn't hurt.

Thanks for the reply xx

It was nice of your Mum to buy them a present, my Nan bought my cat a bag of treats for Christmas and he sniffed them and looked at her as if to say "Are you mad? I'm not eating that." Then he walked off :)) I try not to give my guinea-pigs treats like that, My guinea-pigs prefer extra vegetables or some grass.

I gave mine some honey sticks once. They did not really like it very much and they all have extra hairs around their faces so it got stuck to those!^)

Mine find carrots the biggest treat and extra grass! The only proper treat we get them now is a large hay tunnel.

Often sticky treats like cookies and honey sticks contain lots of fat and sugar and are not good for their weight or teeth.

I had the same situation. I let them chew on it for half a minute while my friend who brought the treat was there and then took it away saying it was like candy for piggies and that I was worried their tummies wouldn't be able to take unlimited treats (which is true).

It's so nice of people to think about our piggies for christmas and visits, even if it's not the ideal gift...

I'd say for a one off it is fine! I wouldn't buy them personally but as a one off treat should be ok as they are deemed "safe" for pigies they are just a bit like junk food so shouldn't be fed reguarly! maybe give them one to try they will probably just turn their noses up at them anyway.

When I first got mine and didn't know any better I spent tons of money on these types of treats and they barely touched any of them! mine are too spoilt with veggies to bother with sugary snacks! :))
