Hi all. I took my poor boy Dexter to the vets this evening after noticing pink pees and some red patches in his urine. The vet said it is a UTI like I thought it was. He has been given a weeks course of baytril and I was told to return after the week if things hadn't improved or if it had gotten any worse. It wasn't until later this evening that I recalled that it takes at least 2 weeks for an infection to clear up? Should I give Dexter his weeks course and if he's better after the week, take him off the meds, or, do I continue for the week and phone up and ask for another weeks worth even if he's seeming better? I feel a bit annoyed that I didn't question it at the time but hey ho, I'm sure there's more than a few people on this forum with the experience and knowledge that can point me in the right direction as of what I need to do  thank you

I would give the vet a call and ask them what they intended.
Usually 7 to 10 days is sufficient in an uncomplicated infection.
Is he on an anti-inflammatory medicine, such as metacam, as well to help with the pain?

Hi Claire
Hope Dexter starts feeling better soon and you can get his medication sorted out.
I have a poorly piggie at the moment Ted. I am becoming increasingly desperate with the lack of good guinea pig savvy vets in Cornwall, do you know of any that are worth their salt? I have had two bad experiences now, I would be prepared to travel anywhere in Cornwall for a good pig savy vet

When our Piggle had a UTI she just had 7 days of baytril, but it came on very suddenly (Christmas eve!) and got diagnosed and treated the same day. And after about 4 days of baytril and loxicom and she seemed better. But the vet still did a follow up appointment with urine tests 7 days later (New year's eve! Our vet is awesome and open practically all the time and always does free follow-up appointments for everything).
Hope your piggy is ok! Its a bit odd the vet wouldnt suggest a follow-up appointment in our experience, after any treatment, but I don't know what other people's experience is...

Thank you I will do. He is on metacam aswell. 3 drops a day which doesn't seem like a lot. He also had a pain relief injection at the vet surgery.

Thank you. I'm with Duchy vets in Redruth. I've been going there for many years now with various animals and they have always been good. However, I don't think they particularly specialise in guinea pigs but the vet that I see owns a fair number and seems to know a thing or 2 about them. I haven't had any problems with them as yet and they have been helpful with my pigs so far although I haven't had any complicating issues since owning them. I hope Ted feels better soon x

Sounds like it will be a good idea to give them a ring at the end of the week just to be on the safe side. Dexter is fine in himself thank you x still popcorning and doing all the usual. They're having floor time at the moment. I'm on pee watch!

Oh, that’s great to know Claire, I’m waiting results for Ted ear growth at the moment. Depending upon what we find and what they say I may be looking for another vet. The vet I saw on Monday didn’t even know how to hold a Guinea Pig then tried and failed to take a biopsy, then booked me an appointment to have it removed with another vet in their practice in Newquay. When we got their she refused to operate and took another biopsy, then they charge me for another consult after I had already paid for Monday failed appointment, truly awful! I’ve already been to a vet last year who was clueless at dentals, so have been going up to Simon Maddock in Northampton. I will look them up, thank you

Hope Dexter makes a full recovery x

Thank you. Your experience sounds terrible! I would give duchy a go and see what you think. They did a successful dental on my rabbit years ago.
