Hi everyone,

I am just interested to know more about using towel / fleece flooring in hutches please.

I was looking into using vet fleece, with newspaper underneath, that you use for dogs as this draws wee away to the bottom so he should stay dry and clean on top but i wondered how often this should be changed? Do i need to change it every day?

Currently i use newspaper with a hay covering as Walter likes to free graze but i am just a bit concerned that even though this gets changed every morning (completely gutted and fresh put back in) that this is possibly still not a great hutch flooring due to the fact the newspaper stays damp until it is changed the following day.

Thanks in advance for any advice

When using fleece I think you do a bottom layer of towels to suck the moisture through and then a nice soft layer of fleece on the top. To be changed twice a week. With newspapers underneath perhaps changing them every other day and the fleeces twice a week would be good? I am not sure that's just what I'm thinking. I'm sure others will be along with advice soon and hey, welcome to the Forum!

I agree with SweetsPig.
But I just use newspaper and it works fine. You don't need to get 3 layers in a cage when you can lay down newspaper and a bit of hay. But if you are really wanting fleece I think you have great advice already:)

I changed from woodshavings to vetbed on newspaper nearly 4 years ago and it lasted about 4 months as I felt that after 2 days, it smellt. I never reall found a good way to wash it so thoroughly that it wouldn't smell so quickly.

I then changed to fleece on newspaper and I still have the same issue. It smells after 2 days... However, I have found that newspaper, vetbed and fleece takes me to 4 days...

i use mattress topper's and make these

you don't have to sew them but having side's stop's poops going under and changing is easy, just take it off with all mess in side shake into bin quick wipe of correx and put another on!

they last a week easy and can be washed in a machine, they don't smell but it depends on what fleece is used

I use fleece, towels underneath and puppy training pads under the lot. This lasts up to a week with daily sweeps. Misty has a hay box and I am lucky in that she poops and wees in that or one corner of her cage which makes it really easy to sweep her out whilst she has cuddle time with OH. This doesn't smell, but is multi layered!

thank you everyone for your advice / opinions! Given me much to think about this morning - the towels and fleece etc does seem quite a bulky layering process and if it smells, i have indoor piggy, then i am not so sure now about swapping him over lol but thank you it is good to know!

4piggiepigs - that bed looks very stylish! and i cant believe just a mattress topper and some fleece can last a week! thats fab. thanks for sharing, just out of interest what type of fleece did you use as i note you say it depends on what type of fleece is used as to how often you would need to change it - did you buy it online?

many thanks all!

I've recently changed to fleece with a Comfort nights mattress protector underneath. As my piggies have a tendency to wee a lot in the same spot even the super-duper mattress topper ( designed for wicking moisture away and locking it in the bottom layers ) has been having trouble coping so I've added 2 puppy pads between fleece and topper in the end of the cage where they wee the most and this seems to cope a bit better. I sweep poo out every day and if there are any wet patches I blow-dry it for a minute of two with the hairdyer ( while the piggies are outside obviously! ). I've been hoping it'll last a week between washes like it does for some but something tells me I'm being optimistic, in fact after four days I'm thinking of chucking the whole lot in the wash today. Hopefully, once they spend more time in the hayloft ( lined with megazorb ) they'll transfer a bit more wee up there and the Megazorb can do it's job!

I changed to fleece about a month ago and prefer it to shavings now. I puta think news paper down, then 1 towel then i have a large fleece blanket that I fold in half so it is doubled up. I find this lasts about 4 days. I put the hay in a hay rack and they have cosys and tubes etc or boxes to play with.

The fkeece needs to be washed first without fabric softner as otherwise the softner makes any pee sit on top, without it the pee goes straight through to the very bottom. I poop scoop each day, sometimes twice, only takes 5 mins and i find it has less smell cos there aren't pee soaked shavings in there and its also way quicker and easier to clean out.

I'm not sure what the different fleece's are exactly just the one that wasn't as good was more elastic, i've also been told polar fleece is the best, my fave fleece liner I made was with dunelm mill pet fleece (it's £2.99 instore) it's very big and made to 4x4 liner's (without the side's ), you can only get it in charcoal or blue with spot's, paw prints or bone's, the liners make it easy to clean too

ok thank you! i found some microfibre fleece blankets in sainsburys today so am going to try these (quite cute - green with dinosaurs on them lol)

make sure you wash them a few time's to break down the waterproof barrier otherwise it wont work so well to start with, i love all fleece you get quite addicted to new pattern's lol I'm always buying it
