Hello everyone,
I have a question about hay. My boys love their Timothy hay (haybox). But they leave the chunky stems. Is this normal or should they be eating all of it? I thought the long stems were the bit that wore the teeth down? Thanks everyone. Have a good day. 😁

All hay will wear the teeth down but some piggies like the thicker stems of first cut timothy hay, some dont.
My own piggies fall into the dont category! It’s for this reason I no longer the first cut Haybox timothy. While some waste is part and parcel of piggy keeping, their flat refusal to eat it shows they just dont like it. They are much happier with meadow hay. They are quite happy to eat the leafier (less stems) of second cut timothy though but haybox have stopped selling it (it was available for a brief period a few months ago but quickly disappeared‘.

Hi. Thank you for your reply. Yes this box is called a Timothy blend and it is rather stalky. They have meadow hay too but prefer the Timothy heads and leaves. Maybe I’ll try another supplier. Thank you.

Our boys are exactly the same, just love the flat bits and the seed heads and leave all the stalks!
I ordered a box from Healthy Herby yesterday as they do a second cut which should be much softer! I will do a post on it once it arrives!

Mine don't eat the Hay Box Timothy now either, they used t like the 2nd cut. I recently bought some Timothy Hay Company hay and they are eating almost every piece. I have decided to shop around a few company's and see what their hay is like. A certain amount of waste is to be expected but I have been throwing away more than half of the Timothy Blend.

I’m so pleased that it’s not just my boys being fussy. I think this batch of hay is too stalky. I appreciate that it is a natural product so we get what has grown. 😄. I’ll definitely have a look at these other suppliers.
