as a 15th wedding anniversary present, my husband has got me a very young boar :)) He (my husband) has heard me say over and over again that Pork needs a companion and that I would love for Pork to be a happy normal piggie and, at last, my wish has come true.

Pork is OVER THE MOON! He has be purring nearly non stop, pop-corning lots but also "putting his scent mark" over the young one all afternoon (light humping, jumping over and rubbing against it).

Info on the young one (still no name) AND questions:-

1. he was born on the 16th July, which means he's 5 weeks old and really tiny compared to Pork! Pork is acting like a playful dad at the moment --- apart from the above-mentioned actions, he's been licking the young one and cuddling up next to it and falling asleep.

2. he was, apparently, fed rabbit food ?/ --- is it ok if he eats what Pork eats (which is Burgess Excel Blackcurrant and Oregano pellets)? It seems impossible to have 2 separate bowls with 2 different pellets as they seem to be cross-eating anyway! So, I've just left the bowl with the Burgess Excel pellets --- will this cause harm?

3. he STINKS of boar wee --- natural, I know --- may I give him a quick warm bath with Pork? Pork LOVES his baths. Just wondering if I can bathe both of them at the same time tomorrow.

4. Is there anything else I should know to care for the young one well? Would hand feeding be a good idea at the beginning, just to get him eating properly?

5. Any other advice?

Oh... I was thinking of naming him "Beans" --- so they can be Pork and Beans :))

THANK YOU for any comments or advice you can give me...

I love the name Beans!

You need not worry about feeding him the same food as Pork. You may be a bit careful about introducing new veg - never more than one at a time, but good quality pellets are the best thing you can do.

Perhaps you can crush a vitamin C tablet and serve a pinch in a piece of cucumber for a few days. The biggest difference with rabbit food is that it doesn't contain as much exta vitamin C as rabbits can produce their own, whereas guinea pigs can't, so your little boy could do with a bit extra. Alternatively, you could mix a bit of a table with a little bit of water and syringe him that. However, at that young age, your little boy should not be in danger of suffering from scurvy yet and will be perfectly fine on a good normal diet.

I am looking forward to pictures of your very special birthday present that hasn't just made only you happy!

Ok - will do.
Is it normal that Beans isn't eating much at the moment? He's sooooooo tiny compared to Pork, so light, and evey bony (normal?). I've hand-fed him some hay, but he doesn't seem to be interested in any veg or pellets (hand-fed or in the bowl). Pork has SCOFFED THE LOT rolleyes

would it be ok if I went to the chemist and bought liquid vitamin C (for children) and gave it to Beans using a medicine dropper? If so, how much do I give?

I was surprised by the rabbit food - it contained like a mixture of things from pellets to corn flakes, etc.

Will post some when things are settled here. It feels like Christmas :)

Aww... I'm glad you and Pork are happy with your gift.

I'm just glad that, after 1 year of living alone, Pork can enjoy a friendship with his kind.

What a lovely husband.

Yes, indeed, even after 15 years of marriage --- fancy getting a gp for a wedding anniversary !

Happy anniversary. He might just be scared being in a new place I wouldn't worry about his eating till he has settled in. I'm sure he will perk up soon. I think the childrens vit C might be quite sweet and he would be better off with a little bit of red pepper and a few sprigs of parsley if you can't give him the crushed tablets.

thank you for all your kind remarks (re our wedding anniversary and Beans!) and for the helpful advice!

Ok - i will "chill out" and let him settle in the next few days. He's just so wee and I worry a little about his well-being, especially with Pork being so ramunctious AND ravenous with his appetite!

Ok - if Vit C tablets (crushed) are better, any particular brand? How many milligram tablets should I crush?

I managed to hand-feed him a tiny slither of red pepper (while Pork stuffed his face with the rest!). Ok, I'll persevere with Vit. C rich veg.

Thanks everyone!

Happy anniversary! By strange coincidence, it is also my 15th wedding anniversary today :)

I hope Pork and Beans will be very happy together. I also got a young boar about a month ago to live with my older one, and they have been very happy together ever since. My baby didn't eat much for a day or two but now he eats as much as the older one and is nearly as big as him although he is only 3 months old!

Did you get a GP too lizzie?:))

aww congratulations.
We have two babies and when we went to a wildlife park they had some guineas there is a run and they looked huge compared to ours! So can imagine how small he must look.
What a considerate hubby. You can tell him that the gp forum give him the thumbs up haha

How wierd. Just found this thread. It was my anniversary yesterday too and I got a GP as well. Happy anniversary to both of you.
