Hi, my guinea pig Chloe seems to have abnormal bottom teeth. I've checked my other guinea pig and they are fine. Very high red gums and bottom teeth are not at the front of her mouth. I will try and get a photo. What could this be?

Hi, this is her gums, is this normal?

Oh my! I’ve not seen anything like that before. It looks quite inflamed. Have you got a piggy savvy vet? Might be worth a check up on that, a lot of general vets don’t know how to check the teeth properly (the back ones are hard to see unless the vet is experienced) and often they don’t get checked.

Where abouts are you based?

@Belleapiggie She's got something stuck around her bottom teeth. You'll need to take her to the vet today to get it removed otherwise it'll stop her eating and could cause dental issues.

We are based near Loughborough in Leicestershire, recommend any vets?

Do I need to call an out of hours or shall I just go tomorrow, I'm not sure I'll be able to go tomorrow because it's a bank holiday.

You're in the same area as me @Belleapiggie. Our recommended vet is Craig Hunt from Chine House is Sileby.

However, if the teeth still look okay then you won't need a specialist vet, any can get the piece off for you.

We can't force you to go to the vet today and pay an emergency charge (Chine House is open 24/7) but if it were my pig I'd rather go now than risk teeth damage later.

If you ever need a really good vet then Simon and Kim Maddock are based at the Cat and Rabbit Care Clinic in Northampton @Belleapiggie. If your piggy does end up with dental issues I'd very highly recommend travelling the extra miles to Northampton. They're my go to vet.

I’ve just seen your post. I have seen this before. She has something like a bead or fastener caught around the teeth. Any vet can remove it for you. Hope all goes well at the vets.

Will they do it whilst she's awake and will I be able to stay with her?

@Belleapiggie It depends on how well it's stuck on and how much she resists. It might just slide off or it may need assistance from a nurse so she'll be taken out back.

Has she eaten anything since it got stuck?

Yes, she is eating pretty much normally and do you have any idea on how much it will cost?

It all depends on your vet. My vet charges a flat rate of £34 for all consultations and then anything they do is in addition to that eg meds. It all depends on how long it takes and what they have to use to remove it.

@Belleapiggie You'll have to ring the vet you're going to use first thing in the morning to ask for a price.

I'd really recommend you getting it removed sooner rather that later. If money is an issue then you really don't want to leave it and let it become a dental issue if the teeth are moved out of line.

:agr: Completely with @Jaycey. This really does need to be seen to as a priority before it causes major dental troubles.

We had this on the forum a few months ago and think it was a hama bead that time. Chine house are fantastic, it shouldn't be a big job for them to remove. I use oadby vets for pets which is the same distance for me but cheaper as they are considered a general vets. You might find with a little further to travel you don't notice much by the way of savings though
