Has anyone got any info on abscesses, as my guinea pig has 1? Hes had antibiotics but the vet says its incased itself and the antibiotics cant get to it. Ive read that draining with a syringe may not work and that removing it is the best option. Any info would be appreciated.

Removing it seems to be the only sure fire way to get at it, however having him on the right antibiotics is also important. I believe zanitac (its called something similar) is renouned to be the best however it is pioneering, and few vets no of it. There is a rmemeber on here whos vet is the one pioneering, hopefully they will come across your thread and be able to help. If not perhaps you could post asking for "absess antibiotics" or such to catch there attention. :) Sorry i couldnt be more help.

Hi Connie yeah I came across that thread that mentioned that antibiotic. Ive wrote it down along with the contact details of the vet pioneering it, I'm going to show it to the vet tomorrow. I think I may just ask them to remove it rather than just drain it as I think that will probably be better.

It ususaly combats the problem quicker (or so ive heard) If you can get your vet to prescribe that I'm sure he will do better with recovery too. Goodluck!

There we go, someone nice and knowledgeable to help. :)

Hi thanks Wiebke, I do have the name and the phone number you mentioned after this drug was mentioned on another thread along with the vet surgery. Do you think it would be worth getting the vet to drain the abscess and then getting this antibiotic (if they will give it) or to have it removed? I really dont want him to put under general anesthetic again as he took along time to come round when he was castrated and had really bad blood shot eyes.

Depending on where the abscess is it should be drained by the vet using a syringe. All the bad stuff has got to come out so the antibiotics can do their job. You will find you need to go back a few times to keep draining it. It will need flushing out a couple of times a day at home as well either with salt water or my vet gave me a bag of a sterile solution to use. I then had to put medical manuka honey into the hole, this draws the bad stuff out and has worked really well to speed it up when I've used it on a couple of pigs now.
If it's not going down then it may have to be removed under general anesthetic.

Well the vet drained the abscess, was horrible stuff (cause she showed me, ew my poor piggy) and they also rang Simon Maddock to talk about zithromax (azithromycin) and are happy to prescribe it me! Had to sign a form which I was fine with doing, she also said that the dosage is quite high is that normal? Can anyone tell me the dosage they had for their piggys? So anyway gotta go pick it up tomorrow morning, just hoping this will sort it :)

I am in love with azithromax, it saved my lovely Ralph,s life !
