Hi, just looking for advice. One of our pigs gas just been diagnosed with a small abscess on his right side. Vet lanced it, got some pus out, and prescribed a week of antibiotics. She said it can take a few weeks of similar to see if it resolves and if not surgery might be needed. Unfortunately a few weeks takes us almost to us going away on holiday abroad for 10 days. Does anyone know if such operations can wait a couple weeks till we would be back, or if not how long /difficult the recovery process would be? Struggling to work out if we can just leave him at usual boarders. Worried about him but also can't afford to just lose the holiday.

I’m sorry to hear this.

Abscesses that are drained can refill and a week of antibiotics is not likely enough.
Abscesses can refill quite quickly and if growing rapidly can need dealing with promptly.
Abscesses are usually stitched open and need to be flushed several times a day so it can heal from the inside out.

This is of course just general information on abscesses because each situation is different - it all depends on the size of the abscess, how quickly it would refill and whether he is on a strong enough antibiotic to deal with it.

- Is it something your boarder is able to deal with?

- Are you able to give your boarder consent to speak to your vet (and vice versa) and authorize a surgery should it be needed?
