Hi
I'm an absolute beginner to both Guinea Pigs and Forums - so here goes! I've just visited a GP rescue in Keighley, West Yorks, near where I live in Ilkley, and fell in love with them all, as you do, but can only take on 2.
I've never had Guinea Pigs before, so have been doing a little homework and speaking to friends about them. They'll be living inside with us, - thats me, Ann, my husband and 2 children.
The lady only had boys, but they all looked good to me - how do I choose? Any thoughts. I've asked her advice, especially if any are more child friendly than the others. My kids are good but of course they'll want to be handling them etc.
I just thought I'd rather re home a couple than just go to the pet shop.
Anyway any advice would be welcome
Ann
PS thanks to the 3 people who've already replied to this under the 'Introduce yourself' heading.

Well done for choosing to rehome, i'd go for the two which appeal to you most, as long as they're bonded and dont mind children, there are very few piggies who would not like children really. I cant really offer anymore advice lol! x

Also, go on the net and find pics of boys bits lol, i know it sounds pervy but even at a rescue theres always a chance they've miss sexed them so you need to make sure the ones your getting are both definately boys because you could end up with anoth 6 which wouldnt be good! x

I think you should just go and take another look at what they have available and I am sure a bonded pair of Boars will catch your eye.

Yeah! I'd say ditto to all the above. Rescues, pet shops, and even Vets (!) have got it wrong before! Sometimes the boars are shy and just wont show their winkies to anyone - until of course it's too late! Good luck & welcome (once again) O0

I would go with a bonded pair of boars that suit you and your family and I would check with the rescue owner about their personalities and whether they would suit you. I love boars :smitten: :smitten:

Let us know what you decided ;)

Thanks for the advice. :)
We are going back next weekend to choose a couple, unfortunately we can't make it this weekend. The person that runs the rescue has them paired up, so it'll just be a question of picking two - we may be there some time! Anyway I shall try and post a photo once we've got them settled.

I know, I'm just spending time surfing the net for piggy info, buying their cage, bedding etc etc. Luckily my children don't know yet as they would definitely not be able to wait. Anyway its nice to have something to look forward to!

Good idea to read up as much as you can. Lots of books and websites do have conflicting information though so be wary of this. I generally go with the most popular! The best ever person to read up is Peter Gurney (RIP). If you've never heard of him he was a fabulous man (went to the Bridge last Summer) who devoted the last about 20 years of his life caring for guinea pigs and educating people. He was heavily invovled with the Cambridge Cavy Trust and Vedra who runs it. His books are really informative, as well as being funny, and quite affordable.

Gold star to you for taking two rescues, brilliant.

You'll have such fun with them and you'll get loads of advice on here too.

(Speaking as a rescue) it's always nice when people take home the ones that have been overlooked and have been there for months, often through no fault of their own.
So perhaps when you are doing your choosing this is something you might consider, just ask the rescue how long they have been there, though of course whichever ones you choose they'll be the best piggies ever! ;D

Happy days ;) ;) ;)

Hi Newgirl and welcome :) Thanks for posting on here, I've removed the other posts in case you were wondering :)
