One of the girls (longer haired) kept being really jumpy and trying to scratch so i used a spot treatment (beaphar brand) on the back of her neck. Shes been fine. I did thr other girl just as a precaution even though she wasnt itching and shes going crazy! Running like a loon and trying to lick it off. Do i need to do anything?

I think you just have to wait for it to wear off, but I guess it has irritated her skin.

We had the same thing happen with 3 out of our 4 guineas, when our vet treated them with a product called Xenex. I was worried about using it, as I had read about it having an adverse reaction on guinea pigs, however, I thought I ought to go along with what the professional said, reasoning that he must know what he's doing. Actually, he was a very good vet, and he had honestly never heard of it having such a bad effect on piggies. The only one of ours who wasn't affected was the largest one, obviously she could tolerate it better. The others went mad, running and jumping, and obviously very unhappy. It took quite a while to totally wear off, quite a number of hours I think.

We spoke to the vet on the phone while this was happening. We didn't need to take them back in, but I am trying to remember what he said. I think he said to watch out for them twitching, a sign that it could be affecting the nervous system. It might be a good idea to ring your own vet for advice.

@Wiebke can you help?

Please contact one of our recommended piggy savvy vets asap and DO NOT home treat on spec! Injudicious/wrongly dosed or applied topical treatment can cause adverse reactions. always see a vet for a proper diagnosis, weight appropriate good quality treatment (which beaphar isn't) when suspecting mites or fungal (which can look very similar at the start, but needs different treatment.

If you really are dealing with an actual outbreak of mites, you may be better off with a round of injections.

From mentioning beaphar, I assume that you are located in the UK, but it would help us enormously, especially in a medical crisis if you added your country, state or UK county to your details, so we can give you the correct advice and links straight away. We have got members from all over world and are having to take the availability of brands, vet/rescue access and climate conditions into account when tailoring any advice.

I would speak to your vet, and tell them what you have used. Usually shop bought products are not a high enough strength to be effective so the vet may recommend using a different product. I always prefer injections from the vet for mange mites but that is due to seeing the effect of some spot on treatments on other pigs.

How'd you get on?

I went to the nearest guinea pig vet listed on the link i was given which oddly enough was the vet i was going to register them with anyway as ive heard nothing but good about them. Hes not worried about her and he cant see mites on either of them. The longer haired one has slightly pinker skin than normal but thats all. I'm going to change their bedding to something other than sawdust in case thats bothering her

I'm glad to hear that they're both okay!
