Hi all. My 15 week old boar bought from Pets at home was sharing a cage there with a boar that was unwell and put down. Post mortem showed he had the adenovirus and no bacteria. Lung damage because of virus. My Guinea was unwell a week after and is still with me but he’s taking quick breaths and I’ve been told this is how he may always be or wait several weeks until he’s recovered from virus. Any tips please? I’m still giving critical care and with supplement of vitamin C x 5 times a day. antibiotics have stopped and he’s got a few days of metacam left.

Have you had your piggie seen to by a vet?
Was the piggie who had a post mortem have samples sent to the laboratory? Do you have the results to hand? A viral infection like this is not impossible but less likely as many pets at home guinea pigs actually have bacterial infections. I would be concerned that yourpig may also have a bacterial infection even if it's secondary to the viral. Please get another opinion from a vet, I would be concerned about your piggie and continual heavy breathing.

The other boar that was put down was not mine. He was the boar sharing a cage with mine and both waiting to be sold. Other one was ill a week before mine. My guinea has been seen by a vet. They treated him with baytril and metacam for 3 weeks. The post Mortem on the other boar has shown no bacterial growth and only a viral adenovirus
