Simon just got home and he told me he heard an advert on the local radio for a pet shop. Not so bad you'd think, but he has a feeling they might be trying to advertise their animals for Christmas - not just the supplies which would have been neither here nor there. :tickedoff:
I dread the thought of people Christmas-buying animals because some of them end up in rescue shelters anyway.
I know a great breeder here who has actually stopped breeding until next year now to stop people Christmas-buying the guinea pigs. I know that because she supplies the local garden centre and my friend (who is also an ex veterinary nurse) runs the pet department and she told me. My garden centre friend completely agrees with our breeder friend and she says she'd rather have empty sale pens over Christmas than see people buying the animals as presents. And I have to agree! O0
Of course not everyone who buys pets for Christmas is going to give them to a rescue shelter because there are people who have thought about it seriously and really do love their Christmas pets.
But I wish pet shops wouldn't advertise the animals at this time of year.
