Hi there,

Yesterday I noticed one of our Boars looked a bit less active and squealed when we picked him up. He is more shy but doesn't usually squeal when handled.
Kept an eye on him this morning and put him in the coolest room of the house. He is still eating (some kale) but not as keen, again squealed when I picked him up and when I stroked shoulders/ middle. He is usually the greedier of the two and first to the food bowl.
I have put him on a cool blanket under his willow tunnel and he looks sleepy and a bit lethargic. He is pooing but they are slightly smaller. No bleeding or lumps/ bumps that I can see but should I make the vet's call now?
Is there anything I can do / check before phoning the vet to give them a clearer picture?

Hello and welcome. Please have your piggy checked by a vet as soon as possible. Lethargy is a sign of something potentially serious and piggies can deteriorate quickly.

OK thank you. Just not sure what it could be. I will call the vet and get him an appointment :)

Hi! Please have your piggy checked as soon as possible. Sudden loss of appetite and leathargy are clear alarm signs.

Be aware that over 80% of the daily food intake is hay, which you can only monitor by weighing daily at the same time.
Step in with syringe feeding support and watering as soon as your boy is losing more than 50g/2 oz. to keep his guts going so any necessary medical treatment has a chance to kick in and be successful. Your home support is as important as the necessary vet treatment. If it is very warm where you are, please have your boy also checked for mild heat stroke but be aware that the extra pressure from the heat can bring underlying problems to the fore.
