Sadly we won't be having Artie the rescue guinea pig, because the other day his one set of teeth snapped and they don't know when he will be fit to be rehomed, so we have decided his not for us due to an going health problem with my guinea pig Snowball.

Snowball went to the vets and had a diuretic injection to hopefully clear fluid in his lungs. The vet has also upped the dosage off Bayril for both of my guinea pigs and said it was ok to put Cookie and Snowball back together. But whilst we was at the vets we asked her if Snowball was deaf, as we always suspected he was because he doesn't respond to noise. She said he is deaf. :(

We have always wanted an indoor guinea pig but felt it was cruel just having one.Would Snowball be ideal as he doesn't interact with Cookie and seems to enjoy being alone, he wasn't even bothered when we put Cookie back with him today. Its sad watching Cookie try to interact with Snowball.

Cookie is a lively 5 month guinea pig (Snowball's 2) and chatty.I feel it's sad as Snowball can't hear Cookie chat, so therefore doesn't respond to him.Is Cookie missing out?

Would Snowball be happy as a indoor guinea pig alone? Then we could get Cookie a lively new friend who he can interact with?

Tricky situation :( To be honest I can't give much advice but hope someone else can.

Can I ask why your piggies are on baytril? If his lungs are full of fluid and the baytril is not working maybe he needs a different antibiotic?

Hope someone can help :)

They have colds (URI) And we have tried another antibiotic in the past, but the vet is ordering Zithromax antibiotic for next week to try.
And yes i hope so:)

That was the antibiotic I was going to suggest :)

I lost a piggie to pneumonia due to an awful vet who misdiagnosed for months until it was too late :( I have since heard of zithromax and if in that position again would ask the vet for it!

Hope your piggies are ok x

Oh that's awful:( Well Snowball has been around 5 times about this cold, due to one vet saying he had teeth problems, then trying different antibiotics etc.
But we had to ask for the Zithromax, as someone of here mentioned it:D

And thankyou x

You know just because little Snowball is deaf does not mean he is not enjoying company. He does not have to be seen to be interacting to just be enjoying having another piggy there. Personally I think they are fine to be together. They are keeping each other company. If you found a friend for cookie it would not be nice for snowball.

I know, but I feel Cookie is missing out interacting with a piggie, as he doesn't make any noises around Snowball. But if Snowball was to be indoors he would be spoilt rotten in my bedroom, and get lots of human attention. Also he could still see Cookie.

I agree with piggyfan. Piggies should only be kept alone in extreem circumstances. Why remove him from a happy pairing? Just because he doesnt reply to cookie with noise doesnt mean they arnt friends. Its good that cookie was trying to interact when they were put back together, this means cookie missed him! snowballs lack of response may also be due to him feeling poorly. Please dont make a rash decision because you wish to have an indoor piggy. If you really want one why dont you just move BOTH your boys inside? *confused*

Hopefully, zithromax will do the trick! It is a very strong antibiotic that is extremely good with bad bacterial infections - URIs as well as bad abscesses. It can save a life where baytril fails!

As to separating the two; you have to judge what is best for your two boys. They may be more strongly bonded than you think.

I only posted this post to see what people thought. And yes i think we should keep them together and i can spoil them rotten. I would love them to be indoors in my bedroom, but i am worried two guinea pigs will make a lot of noise.

Hum - I wouldn't recommend splitting a bonded pair.
Sorry Artie will not be coming to you, I know you loved the little fella and would have given him a great home but you need to concentrate on the piggies you have at the moment before taking on another committment especially if Snowball is not well.
Piggies live normal lives with ailments and the right owners and you cannot guarantee a successful bonding with another friend for Cookie then end up with three lonely boys :...
Just out of curiosity, had you had Artie, what would you have planned then - would he have been a lone piggy ?
Please do not rush into a decision you may later regret :(

I had a bonded pair of sister's who I introduced to my male guinea pig - one sister never inter acted with the other 2 pigs over a period of months. She seemed to be the outsider in the end I decided to let her choose a friend and although they are happy together, something became very apparent my girl is her own pig and although she wasn't interacting with the other's she was happy, she now rarely interacts with her new mate who she chose so just goes to show what we think is going on isn't always the case. Personally I would never break a bonded pair again especially not boys have you seen the boar dating thread boys are not easil
y paired and as someone mentioned you could end up with 3 single boys.

I do hope if I ever go deaf, I'm still allowed to interact with people as it'd be a very long lonely life otherwise. Piggies can still see and smell, just because they aren't talking doesn't mean they don't do the bum dance together or follow each other's lead. I must say none of piggies talk to each other - the girls nag the boys, does that count as interacting, oh and urinate on there faces how could I forget :))?

I don't think human's count as friend, we are there carer's, I don't think anything can replace piggy companionship.

I've thought it through and have decided to have snowball and cookie together in my room. And as for Artie they wanted to rehome him as a single one as he is old. He was going to live in my bedroom. I love my piggies with all my heart, they are a big part of my everyday life. I'm going to spoil them rotten. :)

Just to add I have 6 pigs in my bedroom - the noisiest thing I find is them drinking from the water bottle. If you want one to be an indoor pig it's only fair both of them come inside, plus it's coming upto winter if it's anything like last winter they may all be coming in or you could have some frozen pig's, if not you just have the added stress of keeping them warm - which is a major pain yes it's do able but you don't get to interact with them the way you do when they are inside.

They aren't really noisy at all. Like the other person said, the noisest thing is the water bottle :)
