I've just converted part of my garden into runs for my animals, and to get the most time out i was wondering if i could let 2 pairs of boars out together without them killing each other, or breaking the bond they have with their housemate? The run is 6ft by 3ft and will have igloos etc in so they can avoid each other, but one pair are brothers so i don't want to break their bond, but if they can go out together they can have twice as much time out. I'm assuming the size of run would be ok for the four as they are all small pigs. Please tell me if i'm wrong on that also.

hmmm as a boar lover myself i have never let my piggies in an actual run in more than one pair,i think its to risky there are some people that do it successfully but it can also break up good pairs and i haven't heard of four male piggies functioning long term in runs together,if a fight breaks out which is likely it could affect both pairs,i hope this helps x

Although it sounds like a nice idea, you will possibly (probably) end up with 4 single boars, boars as a general rule are ok in pairs but no more than a pair, even in a large space. Some boars will fall out even within scenting distance of each other.

You're best off keeping your bonded pairs as bonded pairs rather than risking a large fight!

The runs sound great though

It *can* work. I successfully had 5 unrelated boars in my run together, only one pair were amongst these, however, i always supervised & had more problems with my neutered boar/girl groups than i did with my boys but I have to stress i knew the personalities of my boys & would never have done it had i had my pair of brothers been alive as those 2 would scrap with one another if they got a whiff of another piggy, male or female!

If you think your boys won't tolerate other boys then it's far safer to let them out in their pairs & if one set is like my brothers were then i'd let this pair out first.

Thanks for those replies, i won't risk it then, i have one boar that i know will try and be majorly dominant, and that will probably cause problems.

Nikki, you've worried me about the boy/girl groups thing, i'm getting a single boar neutered to go with girls, can you tell me what happened please?

Please don't worry. My neutered boar/girl group/pair were fine together. The "problems" were when i had both boys out with their girls & another trio of girls. One of the trio of girls hated all boys so she would get huffy & chatter if one went near. Maddie only liked HER boy (Albie) & no one else so she used to chase & nip everyone in the run wether they were near her or not. Albie had a few "tiffs" with Esme (the girl who hated boys) this would rile him up so he'd chase anyone EXCEPT Maddie, he knew better :)) :)) They kept me on my toes!

However, i have to say when they were back in their hutches with their respective hutch-mates all was fine :) I have a neutered boar with 2 girls now & they're extremely happy together :)
