Hi Everyone

I have an approximatly 2 year old entire boar, whom is a rescue. I use him almost daily for animal handling workshops with children, so doesn't spend an awful lot of time alone.

However, I am soon to be moving out and have a bit more space to play with and I can't decide whether or not, to introduce him to 2 girlfriends, probably babies.

Of course I would have to have him neutered. A few months ago he did have an operation under aneathestic to remove a lump behin one of his nipples. He coped really well with that, so maybe the operation won't be such a big deal for him? Although I understand it can be stressful to any guinea.

Now with Rodney being a rescue, apparantly he has always been kept alone, and as already stated, his spends his day with me being stroked my children. That's why I wanted 2 girls..... if I got just 1 then that 1 would be alone at home during the day....and I couldn't have a trio of boars as they would more than likely fight.

So I am stuck really - Do I take the risk and have him neutered, but a big cage (or maybe make a c&cone) and 2 rescue sows.....

or should I buy him a bigger cage as I have the space now, with lots of new toys and stuff and keep him as he is (as he does seem happy)

Any opinions would be good.

Hi Andrea,

Why not get him a baby boar? I've no experience with neutring so not sure if he is too old for that. I've two boars living together happily.

I wouldn't but him through an unnecessary op. :)

I had thought of that. But I didn't want to leave the baby alone at home, whilst Rodney is with me.

Now, I probably could take them both, space isn't the problem it's just that the kids would be mithering the hell out of me to see both of them, when I know we really won't have time!

Mmmmmm? Tricky one! I agree the neutering op does have potential problems. I think I would get two young brothers who already get on and a larger cage. I know lots of people say only a pair of boars but I have successfully kept seven boars in a large enclosure with no problems at all (maybe this was a fluke ;)). Good luck whatever you decide, please let us know how you get on.

Why not get two baby boars for him. That way you dont have one left at home alone.

Of course there is the problem that if your still taking the one boar to these handling workshops it may upset the two that are left behind when he comes back with different smells on him.

I would talk to your vet about neutering and see what he says. Might be wise to contact CCT as well about the anestetic (probably spelt worry sorry) that is best for the operation.

Good luck and I hope you find a suitable solution.

Been thinking a lot about this.

I think I may get just the one, baby boar. I decided this because I am soon to get an African Pygmy Hedgehog, which for most of my roadshows would take the place of Rodney, so I wouldn't be using him that often anyway....and when I do, I will take them both with me.

I just have a Ferplast 100 cage at the mo, so for a few weeks they shall be fine in that. I am soon to either buy a 140, or maybe build a c&c as I have lots of space.

Thanks everyone for their advice though! I will keep you informed

Been to Tameside Guinea Pig rescue today, and came back with an 8 week old boar. He's really sweet.

I took Rodeny with me to the shelter and introducted them then, there was a bit of humping going on and bum sniffing but everything went fine. Got them home and left them on the floor for a little while, with some greens. They are both in their cage now, snuggled up together.

Will get some pics up tomorrow.

Awwwww! Bless them (and you) 0:) I want a pal for my lone boar but nasty hubby (why ever did I marry him?) wont let me - I'll keep working on him though! >:D
