Hi everyone,i was hoping for some advice on my young boar.I have noticed over the last couple of days he has dried crows on his nose, not heard him sneezing or anything.Last night i noticed on his coronet he has a small scab,he could have knocked it or do you think its some thing that should be investigated a little more?thanks in advance for any replies.x:...

Hello

It's very hard from a brief description to be able to say quite what the problem would be - perhaps a photo would help.

As there is scabbing? (not a clue what dried crows means) on the nose and now on the head then there could be a skin problem - fungal (ringworm) often appears on the face before spreading further. A vet trip to a cavy savvy vet would be advisable, would you like one to be recommended?

How old is your pig, how long have you had him, his weight, has he a cagemate, where did he come from? The more information you can give the more targeted the advice can be.

Sorry by dried crows i ment dry snot.He is 9 weeks old and he has a little play mate who is 6 weeks old and they are both from the same breeder. He appears happy, popcorning around and eating fine.As for the scab,i always tickle his coronet and have just noticed it,it is small and flat.My local vet is the same one as the potteries guinea pig rescue uses so i am sure they must know a thing or too.I wasnt sure if it needed imediate attention or wether to just watch and monitor it?x

If it is a fungal problem then it will need treatment sooner rather than later as it is hard to shift when it's become systemic. I think I would err on the side of caution and get a vet check - if it is fungal, or something else that can affect other pigs, then the breeder will need to be informed so they can be on shutdown if necessary, they will need to know so they can treat their pigs too. Fungal can take weeks to show so they most likely came with it, unknowingly.

Be very vigilant with hand washing etc as ringworm is transferable to humans and other animals.

I always take my pigs to the vet together. Might be worth getting them both checked and its nice for them to have a friend with them as a trip to the vets can be a bit stressful. Hope all goes well for your piggie.
