Background- We brought these two Guinea Pigs yesterday from a private seller, to get home to find their skin like this. The seller was very clever hold them were the skin was patchy or cuts. The seller was a serving Police Officer so I trusted him when he said there were no issues.
The Guinea Pigs I checked this morning and found a yellow crawling bug ?is it a lice/mite

Action taken - I have washed the guinea pigs with medicated shampoo from pets at home and brought drops to treat them in 2 days time (it was then we found the wounds). I been told to take them to the vets in a week if the issue does not clear up.

Advice wanted - any ideas what this could be? Am I treating the guinea pigs correctly! Staff at Pets at home were shown photos.
Should I apply anything to the wounds ? Sudocrem or athletes foot cream that I have seen others advise.

Oh and the obvious don’t trust someone becauae they are in a role to protect the public!

Hi!

Please have your piggies properly vet checked! It looks like advanced neglect from untreated parasites (invisible mange mites, lice - the yellow thing you have seen - and potentially also a fungal skin infection.
PLEASE DO NOT TREAT on spec with home DIY products that are too weak and may not target properly. This is a serious case, and it needs to be taken seriously to prevent you from causing heart weakening fitting.
Be aware that pet shop staff are not exactly knowledgeable when it comes to treatments or species needs.

What to check and look out for in new guinea pigs (vet checks, sexing, parasites&illness)

If you find that treating an advanced case is too much for you, we will help you getting the poor piggies into a good standard rescue, where people are experienced with dealing with advanced cases like these. It would help us if you please added your county your account details so we can help you to our best ability. You can access location in your account details via clicking on your username on the top bar.

I can only second what @Wiebke has said.

Your piggies need to see a vet for several reasons - firstly they need a proper diagnosis and the correct prescription strength treatement.
But secondly a vet visit will protect YOU.
I can not emphasize this enough.

A few years ago we took on a pair of rabbits from a well respected local person, and we were also tricked - one of the rabbits was seriously ill, and sadly after extensive (and expensive) specialist care we still had to have her put to sleep.
At that point the person who had sold us the rabbits made a fuss and tried to say we had neglected the rabbit which had been in 'perfect' condition a few weeks previously.

Thankfully because we had seen the vet right away there was a full record of the fact that the rabbit had clearly suffered from extreme neglect for many weeks prior to coming to us. In the end the previous owner actually paid some of the vet bills.

So please take your piggies to the vet - if nothing else you should have proof that they came to you in this condition.

Unfortunately pets at home really are not as knowledgeable as they’d like you to think they are. So a Vet trip is the only option for your piggies.
Well done on trying to do the right thing and making them better.

2 of my girls were rescues, they had awful wounds, hair loss and sores over them. We took them straight to the vet and was given mite drops. The vet also discovered Olive has a heart mumour.
With a clean living area, good food, rest and the right medication the girls made a full recovery.
I have never bathed them, or put cream on.

Good luck :)

@CharLou yeah, a vet trip is absolutely needed. Plus, the shop bought treatments can be completely ineffective even for their purposes and these conditions can be fatal if left for too long, which it has been already the poor souls.
Well done in looking for advice to make sure they're getting correct treatment and not just taking P@H dodgy advice for granted. Those little pigs got lucky with you. 👍

Thank you for the advice, I will book a vet appointment straight away. These poor piggies. It’s shocking and upsetting me that someone can allow this to happen to what were their poor innocent pets.

Make this local Policeman pay for your vet bills too. Take plenty of photos as evidence x I wonder how many more he has in that state, needs reporting x Goof luck with your little ones, hope they recover soon

Welcome to the forum @CharLou and well done for taking on these 2.
It sounds as if they have really landed on their paws.
Take plenty of photos and all the vet’s bills and diagnosis material - as has been said that proves you are not the one who neglected them.
I would also report the seller to the RSPCA.
Let us know how things go

Poor piggies, how horrible to let them get in that state. Really hope you can get them feeling massively better very soon :)

You can report the seller anonymously to the RSCPA, with pictures.
Anybody selling piggies can also be reported to the local council over trading standards.
In your case, I would also complain to the police about basically mis-selling badly damaged ware to unsuspecting customers.
