I had my little boy, Toby, neutered last Tuesday - he has been a little quiet and not eatting too much since then. He'll eat his veg no problem, but isn't really eatting his hay or pellets.

The last couple of days he has started to have really soft poos.

Should I be concerned and is there anything that I can do?

Sorry to hear this Angela.

Favouring veg could be down to either low appetite (only interested in the 'special' foods!), or the start of a dental problem (able to eat soft foods that are not as tough to chew).

Can you get hold of some different types of hay (ideally some Oxbow), and a different brand of pellets? Just to try and spark an interest in the hard foods again.

For the veg, ideally you would cut it out altogether for a day or two until the poops are a normal consistency again and even though veg is all he is eating, I would have to recommend it in this case too, just to prevent the poop problem worsening and creating another hurdle for him to get past.

As he isn't eating reliably otherwise, you'll have to be prepared to syringe feed him.

Thanks Laura.

I won't give him any veg for a couple of days and see how things go. I'm also able to get different hay so I'll go get some today, along with some new dried food.

I've just scattered some hay about his cage - he's been on fleece since his op, in the hope that it was more comfortable for him - so will see if that makes a difference too. Although he normally clears his hay rack - in fact, he usually eats quicker than my 2 girls put together.

I already have syringes (I like to be prepared) so that isn't a problem to syringe feed him if required.

This is the first time I've had an unwell guinea pig so it's all a bit new and I'm totally unsure of what to do.

Is he on baytril? Then the soft poos and diminished appetite could be down to that.

In this case, try to get hold of some probiotics to help get the guts going.

Best of luck and a good recovery! It can take 2-3 days for the body to settle again after an op.
