Hello

Here is previous story of my guinea pig The Guinea Pig Forum
Everything was ok for the whole year but she had some small amount on dipstick test (not visible in anyway by eye). Unfortunately on Christmas Eve she had again large quantities of blood in urine (she peed in blood). I gave her Bactrim and after Christmas I went to vet. She said that I should continue it for 2 weeks. Blood disappeared after 12 hours and she was ok. After week in lab test blood was 250 Ery/ul, and after 2 weeks blood was still present in lab test 25 Ery/ul, so she took Bactrim for another 2 weeks. I tested her urine again blood was 50 Ery/ul. So I was advised to give Bactrim for another week (or change to Baytril injections), I went to another vet for consultation who said that Bactrim given for so long will damage her kidneys, guts etc. Neither of them mentioned IC or gave something inflammatory.
To sum up, the lab results were as follows:
after two weeks of Bactrim - 250 Ery/ul
after three weeks of Bactrim 25 Ery/ul (so she got better)
after four weeks of Bactrim 50 Ery/ul and some small amount of proteins appeared.
Can someone advise on these results?
I do not know what to do next. Should I continue with Bactrim for another week? (The second vet made me scary a bit....) There was no stone when xrayed. She is ok, but a little bit lethargic and sleepy (her weight is normal, she eats as usual but drinks much less).

Hi @Aga! Could you post the link to your original thread please? The one above doesn't work.

What was the original problem with your pig?

Unfortunately I don't know the specific values for blood in urine, so I can't say whether it's high or not. But I do know that a trace amount of blood is common, especially if your vet has to express the urine from the pig themselves.

Does your vet think your pig has an infection and that's why they've prescribed antibiotics?

Has the vet assessed for bladder stones or sludge? These can irritate the walls of the bladder, thus leading to blood in urine. I know my vet basically stopped bothering to dip my bladder stone pig for blood, as he said it wouldn't really prove anything, as she would likely always have some traces of blood there. Stones can be assessed by x-ray, so that might be a pretty noninvasive starting point. If you're concerned about the duration of antibiotics, try not to worry, as longer courses of antibiotics can be okay and may be needed to wipe out persistent infections.
