Age Of Guinea Pigs

I think I heard of a guinea pig living to 14.
The average is 4 to 8 years I think. It is very controversial.

I've also heard of 14 as oldest ever guinea pig. Average age they live to is 5-6 I'd say.. But it can vary a lot from age 3 or 4 up to 8. Unfortunately none of my previous guineas have lived past 4 :/

The oldest ever recorded piggy has recently died in Australia aged 17. Until then 14 years was the oldest guinea pig listed in the Guiness book of records. 4-7 years is about average.

The oldest piggy I've had was almost nine, he was a Buff smooth coat called Bamboo. The first one I had as a child lived to be eight & I had a male Rex who was seven.

My understanding is that 5 to 7 is about average life expectancy, but some may live longer. One of the techs at my vet had one that lived to be almost 9. The two pigs I have right now are 5 (turning 6 in November) and 4.5 years. I would love it if they would live to be teenagers, but I know it's not likely in the cards. At almost 6, we are definitely seeing Linney looking older, though a recent vet check did not find any issues with her other than age. She has lost some muscle mass and thinned out a bit and generally just appears older and sleeps more. Sundae (younger pig) still seems about the same as ever at 4.5 years.

@Wiebke was that Sweetie? I'm so sorry to hear he died after reading his story in the magazine

I regularly had them live to 7 or 8 years, all lived free range, out side in a huge run. I put it down to no stress, they were handled but only by adults, with years of experience. I think in all the time I kept them only a couple ever went near a vet! They were a healthy bunch.

Yes my last 2 have lived to over 8 but not quite 9. Yet I have had previous pigs die younger.
